    Busted STH Parts

Edit: (Incorrect title. These are older 4 hole solly’s, not STH. See below.)

A buddy's brakes popped off and we discovered this:

WTF! Is this a known issue and where can parts be had?....or time to replace the whole binding?

No that is not a known issue. Looks like it took a massive impact or got run over. I would toss them and remount with new/used.

For clarity, are these STH2 heels? And they are not the 16 DIN model?

That's a very frequent problem with the older 4-hole heels, after they started to lighten up the tracks ca. post-9/11. I should have one in the parts bin, won't be back up at the shop til the weekend. Check the other one, it's most likely going if not gone already.

Older 4-hole solly heels, non-sth. S914/spheric era. It's just shitty metal, and the rear heel screws only retain the track through indents on the side; no wraparound brackets like the 5-hole heels. Not Salomon's finest hour, but not their worst.

Even more common with the 912 Ti heel track models. Save those for low DIN riders.

Seen this happen on the 912 but not a 914 or sth where the brake pad steel has snapped like that. Not saying it can’t happen but it is very rare. The track cracking issue at the rear screw, sure. Granted I don’t see as many as a shop but have seen shit load of binders in my time.

Or proper ones, like Pivots. Apparently, after this season, he’s demoting these Mantras to rock skis and just needed these fixed and operational…..and safe.

If this was a common issue, you gotta wonder how many injuries occurred. If he didn’t notice this and had a release, his ski could have turned into a missile and/or stepped out of his skis at the wrong time at high speed, in the bumps, etc…..

I picked a pair of old school mantras cheap and they had a similar issue (Salomon 912ti bindings). I swapped the heals into some steel rails from my bin.

The seller claimed not to have noticed. I hardly paid anything for them so I didn’t make a big deal about it. Still dangerous if one had let go
