    Tesla Plaid

    Anyone else had the "pleasure"?

My customer got one a few months back and I have been avoiding a ride in it until he had some hours behind the wheel.
Not a fun experience. First blast onto the highway off the ramp, going about 30 at the start of the ramp and hit the "gas", kicked me into my seat and I saw stars like we were entering hyperspace on the Millennium Falcon.

2nd and 3rd were Launch Control, and those were even less fun, though by the 3rd I started to get used to it, which was scary in its own way.

We pulled down a Cul De Sac area in an industrial park and pulled to the start of the straight road out. 0-70 in maybe 100 yards. Puke.

I guess I get the appeal. He still has all the plastic on the screen. Has a deposit on the Rivian and plans to sell this soon.
It felt like driving in a computer. Maybe if I drove it I would feel different, but it felt soulless to me.

I snagged a ride. Like being in a spaceship, computer simulator or theme park ride. A singular experience no doubt but I’m a naturally aspirated large engine fellow, which doesn’t bode well for my choices.

I recall the yoke being sketchy at speeds too.

    I recently got a few launches in a 2022 992 911 Turbo S. 0-60 in 2.2sec.

I was smiling and laughing and screaming to do it again the second it was over.

There’s something to be said for the mechanical feel as opposed to speed by hard drive.

I took a ride in a Tesla pre-Covid while in Shanghai. It has a very uncomfortable back seat.

I still prefer the sound of a flat six under the hood of a Porsche as the tach reaches 7k RPM, over the whirr of a Tesla.

Well, this is disappointing. I was expecting a nice tartan, or at least maybe buffalo check.

They should just upload Spaceballs to the display interface.

Plaids are fun for about three pulls. I also dislike the steering wheel.

I like the sound of 8 cyl. and headers. I like the fact that I can drive 400 miles without stopping for 45mins to "refuel". I don't like the heavy weight distribution of electric vehicles. I'm not convinced that mining lithium isn't as bad for out environment as fossil fuels (although, I don't think of that when buying a vehicle.)
Maybe, if I lived in a congested city like Amsterdam or NY, I would consider driving electric., but not in the less populated and colder areas where driving is still a pleasure.

I guess some are not getting it

It’s silly dangerous. A soccer mom can stop on the peddle and run a 9 second quarter mile. There has never been anything like it on public roads before

There’s nothing close. The world is changing.

The difference is Teslas have tons of nannies in place to keep traction, where a Hellcat Redeye or Mustang GT500 do not.

I had 70 yr old client give me a ride in hers, reminded me of my old RC cars, but I could get used to the lack of noise.

That being said, I like gears and air cooled N/a

The boomer/gen x fondness for ICE and manuals is something I can’t help but resonate with, but it’s a bit like those people who like having an actual calculator on hand for doing math rather than using their smart phone.

Murican love of eating and drinking and phone scrolling killed off manuals years ago, so the appliance like feeling of a BEV isn’t that much different than a modern 10 spd auto softly transitioning thru the gears.

Current battery density isn’t high enough to create a nimble car with decent range, but on the handling front the ICE market already transitioned mostly to FWD or FWD-based AWD for reasons we all know, while BEV allows for RWD or AWD without the usual packaging issues of ICE…and arguably will enable better handling cars overall as a long term result.

Guess my point is that even a curmudgeon like me realizes an AWD BEV that I would enjoy driving is a likely purchase eventually.
Know of a pair of Fischer Ranger 107Ti 189s (new or used) for sale? PM me.
