Since the all star break, the Blue Jays have as many wins at Fenway as the Red Sox.

Does anyone else think that people talking about the differences between control and command are annoying? They're literally saying the same thing.

Does this mean control is only about balls and strikes, and command is about location in the strike zone? I’m confused

Control is about throwing strikes. Command is about throwing the ball where you want it, in or out of the zone, with the movement you want.

Are there people throwing lots of strikes without command? Seems like a pointless designation. But I’m not a scout or some sabermetrics nerd.

Yes, that is why there is a designation.

There's no designation, it's just marketing. If you have really good control, e.g. maddux, you're just throwing it down the middle every time? ridiculous. i don't think sabermetrics has anything to do with it either unless they have some sort of stat for "quality strikes" which would be the strike zone minus the donut in the middle or something. Just my opinion, but in ten years there will be some new jargon to replace it.

Maddux had both. I think the idea is that there are pitchers who consistently throw strikes and there are pitchers who consistently paint the corners. Seems like the terms are an attempt to differentiate between those two skills.

One thing I have heard from football people about stats and rankings, and I think it applies to pitchers, is that you don’t really ever know what somebody’s assignment was on any play. For pitchers you aren’t really sure exactly where each pitch was supposed to be thrown. You have a guess based on the catcher, but that’s not always reliable (especially up/down in the zone). So those scores are inherently subjective, but treated as objective numbers.

The Mets ceremony retiring Willie Mays number was cringeworthy.

I always understood command in relation to being able to throw a pitch type (breaking, etc) properly. Control was being able to hit the catchers glove with it. And it’s pretty easy to figure out where the ball was supposed to be thrown, just look at the catcher’s glove. Go look at old film of Greg Maddux for textbook control. The exception was the high out of the zone fastball that you throw to aggressive hitters, you threw to the catchers helmet.

Ichiro inducted into Mariner HOF, first Asian super star in MLB. I remember Rob Dibble making a bet with Dan Patrick he wouldn't hit 300 then having to run around Times Square in a speedo.
First ballot MLB HOF in a few years to come

Tonight the Yanks can break their record for most losses in a month in thirty years. And if not tonight, then they still have tomorrow. .696 1st half, .392 second half.

Dodgers cruising and Thursday I get to see Clayton Kershaw pitch in a day game in Queens. 14ish years since I saw him for the first time at Shea. Stoked.

Winning pitcher for the Dodgers: Heath Hembree

    Save goes to Jake Reed.

Both on roster less than a day.

Gavin Lux, homegrown talent was the man.
    This team is remarkable

Facing Nolan is a good watch. Ryan is exceptionally boring but the doc is well made and his accumulation stats and longevity are mind boggling.

Now its time for someone to do Rickey some justice and tell his story.

18 seasons with an OPS+ of at least 120. A quarter century as an everyday player. Easily the greatest base stealer of all time. A motherfucker that just got on base and scored runs. Guy is the hallmark of individual player value. Wherever he went, they won.
