    What computer now?

Sure. Shit happens. You are so very free to think that your personal backup infrastructure is superior in terms of security, availability, and redundancy to a multi-billion dollar data center managed by teams of professionals. I’m good with it!

It all boils down to the fact that you like being in physical control of your data. Can’t put a dollar on that one, even if it isn’t always rational. I’m actually an advocate for in-sourcing datacenters and data management as a business decision, and have defended that decision frequently over the years on a professional level, but all those reasoned defenses break down for personal use.

Well, security, definitely. Do you actually think Microsoft says no when the NSA comes knocking, warrant or no warrant?

Do you actually think the NSA would break a sweat hacking your shit?

    Honestly?

Anyways, less worried about them than I am some fucking teenager in Russia who wants to ransomware all my family photos, and I trust the protection of MS or any of the other big cloud providers over my own efforts any day of the week.

ETA: nothing says you can’t encrypt the files you care about, cloud provider or no. If you’re worried about the NSA snooping on…whatever it is you’re worried about them snooping on, put a password on it. Maybe the NSA can break SHA256, and maybe your baked bean recipe is worth it for them to reveal that capability to the rest of the world.

    But probably not.

But, I'm not worried. I just do it at home. It really isn't a hassle.

And, if the NSA found out what's in my secret folder, I'd have to kill them.

Sure sure. Just pointing out that because it works for you doesn’t mean it makes sense based on its own merits. If you like the way your stack of external HDDs make your tinfoil hat look, that’s great. I only dig in here because this is an advice thread, and outside of some kind of (possibly justifiable) paranoia, there is no rational reason to pursue local backups over cloud backups if it’s one or the other.

Back in the day you could plug it into a Mac and pull a local backup using iTunes. I imagine this is still possible, pending the condition of your iPad.

Yup. I still do backups at home due to one reason, and one reason only:

    bandwidth

My upload speeds are, predictably due to cable, nice and shitty.

Once this issue is resolved, my backups will be in the cloud.

Yeah, and good luck finding that case. I took a look at the links after and not easy to find. It gives an idea of what you can do with TrueNAS though.

Ironically, I just checked and I can get 4x the upload as well as 4x the download speeds from my cable connection simply by switching to a new (cheaper) service and getting a new cable modem.
