SEG's "Entertainment District" and the Millers revitalization of the area off of North Temple are both going to take significant public funding, either in the form of taxes, write offs, land swaps, etc. Some of this is going to come down to the optics of fucking the poor while feeding the rich. It'll be interesting to see what notoriously tax adverse Utahns are willing to put up with especially in the shadow of the spending that will occur with the inevitable upcoming Olympics

Keep in mind, the entire NHL deal took place in an unfathomably short period of time. I'd like to think if the stars align, MLB could happen quite quickly too. The Millers like to get shit done.
Here's a primer on how the NHL went down.

Selfishly, I hope we get a team but it really seems like a longshot to me. No one would say SLC is a better option than Nashville or Charlotte, so we would have to hope that the 1 east coast team and one west coast team rumors are true. I think it would have good local support, but what would be in it for the other MLB franchises? What would adding another small market revenue sharing welfare team to the league really benefit anyone outside of Utah? It's not like SLC will be a destination city for opposing teams, and I doubt a franchise here is going to add a bunch of new eyes to MLBtv. I just don't see it happening.

Bummer to see Steve Klauke die. His voice was well known here, I’ve listened to a lot of Bee’s games he called.

heh, Utah was the birth of Breaking News. Despite living in Utah I've never visited Golden Spike National Historical Park. I did randomly come across this video with some funny anecdotes: the US transcontinental railroad completed in 1869 could have finished a lot sooner but the two crews kept digging and clearing land in parallel within sight of each other until the federal government stopped paying. And on the ceremonial day of completion the master of ceremony showed up late & hungover.
The completion of the US transcontinental railroad in 1869 in Utah was also the birthplace of the newsflash. The news was delivered via telegraph through a clever scheme: the famous golden spike and a silver hammer were each wired to the telegraph so that when hammer struck nail, the circuit completed and the news raced out along telegraph wires to the rest of the nation. It was a news event that paralleled the moon landing in terms of public interest.

Sometimes. there's good news.
"Utah was on the brink of becoming the next state with a near-total abortion ban last week. Our Legislature attempted to take us down the same path as Idaho, where some pregnant patients are told to purchase air ambulance insurance in case they need to be flown to another state for life-saving care. We almost became a place where doctors could face 15 years in prison for trying to help their patients. Instead, on Aug. 1, the Utah Supreme Court issued an important decision to protect abortion access in this state.
The court’s decision did three things. First, it kept abortion legal and accessible in Utah up to 18 weeks of pregnancy. Second, the court ruled the injunction, or pause, blocking Utah’s abortion ban from going into effect was properly decided and that Planned Parenthood Association of Utah had legal standing to challenge it. Third, the justices sent the case back down to a district court for additional litigation, which was expected.
Most importantly, the state’s Supreme Court said that abortion bans raise serious questions about Utahns’ rights, including the right to bodily integrity, the right to care for one’s family and the right to gender equality under the Utah Constitution. These are fundamental rights that some Utah lawmakers want to erase with their abortion bans. The court also ruled that there are substantial questions about whether the Legislature’s attempts to ban abortion violate those rights, rejecting the state’s argument otherwise. Plus, the court acknowledged “the physical, emotional and financial impact” a total abortion ban would have on Utah women forced to continue unwanted pregnancies."

From the article:
“Natalie Cline, who sits on the board, is happy with the move, but said the list of banned books falls far short. Cline is an outgoing board member who lost in the Republican primary this year after she questioned the gender of a high school basketball player.
“Removing only those 13 books when there are hundreds more that are just as explicit, that also need to go, is problematic,” said Cline, saying that tests for literary value in books is “absurd” and “subjective.”
Cline added that all sexually explicit content, including in science or medical classes that the new law permits, should be out of K-12 schools, citing the state’s criminal code.”
What a fucking lunatic. What do do what to bet her husband is a porn addict and her kids are huffing nitrous in the bathroom.
It’s painfully ironic that a group of people who follow a religion founded by a sexual deviant would be such prudes.
