The rocket fuel story is near and dear to my heart. YouTube however is full of dangerous things that should not be attempted unless you know what you're doing, and even then, sometimes not at all.

When the kids were younger my wife did a lot of hands on fun educational activities with the kids. She was a regular ol Miss Frizzle.
Someone told her about sugar rockets which you can make legally under certain restrictions using Potassium nitrate, Sorbitol, and Red iron oxide. Unfortunately she lost the directions that she was given and went looking on the web. She has a bias towards videos and away from written instructions. I'm the opposite.

Anyway, I came back from a work related trip to find a thrift store pot with a red mass permanently baked onto it. Further questioning revealed that she tried to cook the fuel. And fortunately stopped because "the consistency wasn't right" or something to that effect. No explosion that day. I'm glad everyone is ok. She scared herself a little which is good.

My youngest was interested for a while. He got the real instructions and made some good sugar rocket motors. But stopped because making the really good ones is a little harder and more involved. The neighbors were ambivalent about objects falling from the sky within a four house radius. There's a video of one landing on a canopy over our deck. It has a hole in it now.
