I don't think even ardent Trump supporters should be surprised by the fact Putin rolled Donald by playing to his vanity. The George W Bush story about the cross and George looking into Putin's soul was... odd. The same with Obama and the phone calls starting with a 45 minute Putin lecture. The fact that we have all these analysts & specialists who devote their lives to studying the Kremlin, and it all comes down to a handful personal interactions impacting the course of history.

Even though Ukraine is outgunned and outnumbered by the second largest military in the world they are significantly outperforming Russia at warfighting. That's a direct observable indication Ukraine is much less corrupt than its Russian opponent. Contrary to all the talking points too, Ukraine is using NATO weapons tracking systems and American & European observers/accountants are in the country working to track everything.

There was a good piece on Frontline on PBS the other night about how successive presidents misjudged Putin and let him get away with Georgia, Crimea, and eastern Ukraine, leading him to believe he could get away with an all-out invasion. It took an old, "weak" man to stand up to him. Should be available on line.

It’s up on the YouTube. I don’t recall who said it, but the line, “A bully will keep being a bully until he gets his nose bloodied” summed up for me how we got to Ukraine.
