"Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) announced his introduction of a joint resolution that would authorize the use of U.S. Armed Forces to defend the territorial integrity of Ukraine in the event that Vladimir Putin escalates his unjust war against our democratic allies. This Authorization for Use of Military Force to Defend America’s Allies Resolution of 2022 would authorize the President of the United States to utilize our forces to respond to a scenario in which the Russian Federation uses chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons against Ukraine"

On another note though, this is a deeply unsettling subject to think about. The fact that it is even a remote possibility just befuddles the mind.

    Speaking of befuddling the mind:

For half a millennium, Russian foreign policy has been characterized by soaring ambitions that have exceeded the country’s capabilities. Beginning with the reign of Ivan the Terrible in the sixteenth century, Russia managed to expand at an average rate of 50 square miles per day for hundreds of years, eventually covering one-sixth of the earth’s landmass.

When Putin runs a racist authoritarian regime, and sends the "lesser" races to do his fighting, there is some risk of separatist movements. Especially if he kills a lot of them, or loses.
https://threadreaderapp.com/user/kamilkazani has a thread showing which Russians are fighting and dying

Because it raises questions about the dissolution of the usa? Russia isn’t that old.

Russia runs on corruption and dry rot. Russian military vehicles are driving around with tires "MADE IN USSR" in English script. Which means they are old and were made for an export market, probably India.

Somebody reached deeply into a storage depot somewhere in the Russian Federation to get those Cold War era tires because there was nothing else.

You don't put something that potentially dangerous on a major weapons system unless you are desperate. Even if you are Russian.

Both sunk by drones. The boats were Russia's newer Raptor-class patrol boats. Ukraine also destroyed two surface-to-air missile systems on Snake Island. Sinking the Moskva, Russia's main air defense in the Black Sea, has had a big impact.

You could take almost any military and introduce an all-day-every-day shitfaced-on-vodka SOP and it would look like that.

Yeah, mentioned this up-thread - was was hoping you and MV would comment. Seems to be tightly focused and therefore harder to abuse, but pre-approving something of this impact makes me nervous.

except you couldn’t introduce that policy in every military, in Russia you can because leaders are utterly indifferent to casualties as they have been for centuries.

Pre-approval is a problem. I also think grouping chemical, biological, and nuclear together is a problem. If we draw an expanded red line and then there's no response the line gets erased.

Because they were used in Syria, we already know chemical weapons are possible. That taboo is already broken. So lumping chemical weapons in with nuclear weapons runs the risk of moving nuclear into the same category as chemical which makes nuclear deterrence less credible.

It also doesn't address what I think is the most likely nuclear scenario where Russia tries to hold onto captured territory in the face of Ukrainian advances, after holding a fraudulent referenda, and then draws their own red line around it with a nuclear threat. At some point so many threats are issued they lose meaning, essentially daring adversaries not to take them seriously.

The Russian national motto should be, "And then it got worse..."

Seems Russians crave a sadist freak who ascends by the most Machiavellian means. No one but blood drenched mass murderers and antichrist wannabes seem to be good enough.

Some Ukraine drone blowing Russian iron up porn. You know you shouldn't enjoy it, but you will.

Nailing that patrol boat while it was doing evasive turns at 50 mph was impressive. Ukraine claims boat boats sunk.

Is US controlling those? It's not like anyone would know. It takes a complex network to do that.

I know the bayraktar has its own song now but the name always reminds me of the Daktari theme song.
