Maybe Putin is so ornery because he’s got a cavity that needs filling?

Ukraine just plastered the Black Sea fleet with drones made from a Jet Ski, Starlink antenna, the guts of a consumer drone, and a lot of boom packed into a shell. THIS is the kind of thing that should be making the "great navies" tremble, not costly zillion mile an hour missiles.

You aren't going to track down a fleet at sea with these. but for Putin's fleet in harbor, sure it is a threat, but for two unique reasons:

    1. Russia bases large fleets very close to opponents so such attacks are feasible whether in Sevastopol, Kaliningrad, or maybe St. Petersburg. It would be harder in Polyarny and harder still in Vladivostok.

    2. Poor defensive systems: Russian defensive systems seem to be left off due to shit professional readiness and/or are nonfunctional due to extreme corruption (which probably cost them the Moskva). Russia also has proportionally more of their fleet composed of small combatant vessels appropriate for littoral operations that have fewer protective systems and that are more vulnerable to smaller warheads in smaller drones.

Is this a threat to the US?

    1. Distance is our friend: Our large fleet bases are Norfolk, San Diego, Kings Bay, New London, Kitsap, and Pearl Harbor, plus Yokosuka. These are not easy drone strike locations unless an adversary clandestinely transported the drones just of the coast undetected for a first strike, otherwise ample defense would be up, and still there are defenses in place.

    2. Good defenses: USN has been investing heavily to protect our fleets at home and abroad from suicide boat, small craft swarm attacks, and USV (floating drone) attacks ever since USS Cole in 2000. We have a lot of system in place to secure vessels in harbor from boat buster buoy nets to the ability to missile and gun systems to the ability to depress the CIWS to engage small surface contacts. For UAVs, since the 1960s USN has been very heavily invested in being able to shoot down Soviet saturation attacks of hundreds of incoming transonic/supersonic missiles which easily negates low speed drones drones large enough to have range and large warheads needed to attack warships.

The largest challenge for any adversary will be locating our fleet and guiding an attack to terminal range without interception and with enough weapons to overwhelm defenses and countermeasures. You cannot do that with cheap light UAVs or USVs across an ocean or against a fleet at sea.

So, we definitely do have a concern about "zillion mile an hour missiles" like the PLA's DF-21D and DF-17 due to the low probability of intercept.

Hell, if you’ve ever taken a small craft anywhere near a carrier in harbor you find out pretty quickly that you’ve been noticed

I bet! $20+ billion in strategic assets including nuclear reactors, nuclear weapons, 5000+ sailors, and 75 aircraft... they are touchy about having a potential $50k VBIED impair mission readiness.

Russia is whining about longstanding US modernization plans for US nuclear bombs in Europe. In December we'll be deploying the Mod 12 version of the B-61 gravity bomb. These bombs would let US F-35, F-16, and F-15s strike buried Russian bunkers. Some could also be given to NATO Nuclear Sharing partners (Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Turkey, and Italy... maybe Poland soon!) although I don't know if places like Turkey even have nuclear rated F-16 squadrons anymore.

Throughout the Cold War, Russian leadership has never liked the idea of being dug out of their hidey holes that they have invested so heavily in. The idea of stealthy F-22, F-35, and B-2s roaming Russia getting updates on where to nail the motherfuckers who kicked things off gives Russian leaders pause. It's a great mental deterrent.

Historic footy of Ukraine naval kamikaze drone attack on Glorious Black Sea Fleet last night

    https://old.reddit.com/r/UkraineWarV...ian_black_sea/

Much more of this and Lord Poot won't be able to blockade Ukrainian grain exports or launch his last few remaining Kalibrs at kindergartens and hospitals

Iran can't be best pleased either, considering their nukedev holes aren't any deeper.

Russians killed and ate all the animals at the Yampol Zoo. Many appear to have just killed for fun and left to rot.

Camels, Lions, Beaver, raccoons, Ostriches, turtles, more..

Skins are laying around like they planned to take them home or sell. Maybe forgotten in retreat

So according to ukraine defence sources the German Iris T Missile defence has an accuracy of 100%.
Everything that came into it's radius has been shot down.

They probably need a few more and each shot is 500k euros I've heard, but still....

Made in Germany. Everyone laughs about German overengeneering.....until it counts.

It's a war of the mind and we're armed to the teeth.

According to sources Ukraine destroyed 2 Ka-52 helicopters and damaged two more at an airfield in Pskov Russia. Then they also took out 2 Ka-52’s in Odessa. Additionally they apparently took out one or two mi-8 helicopters.

Great day for Ukrainian air defense.

Totally makes sense for a defense system… not needed for electric windows in a car however.

nobody laughs at Germany’s over engineering. we love them for their precision.

being completely dependent on Russia and China for their basic heating needs for their citizens, manufacturing raw materials, and export sales is why we’re laughing at them…

Reports from sources I’ve not heard of before say two helos went boom at airfield in Pskov. Like maybe some clandestine activity. No one’s taken credit.

This eloquent graph, pretty much sums up things for the Russians in Ukraine.

That’s wild if true. Only in 2022 would we get a video of a dude setting explosives on enemy helicopters.

In broad day light - no one seems to be anywhere near by.

We’ve had Canadian Armed Forces helis assist with fire fighting- literal antiques - you couldn’t just walk up to them. (They would totally give you a tour if you asked though)

And we were only at war with a fire.

Sorry - special fire operations to de-fire-fy the forests.

A couple of days ago Putin cancelled the grain deal with Ukraine. The next day 40 or so cargo ships filled with grain set sail from Odessa. It turns out from Ukraine's point of view the grain deal is with Turkey and the Turkish navy is guaranteeing the cargo convey's safety. Will be interesting to see how this plays out. 'Cause we got a little ol' convoy Rockin' through the night...

Depends if Russia decides to start torpedoing merchantmen. They do have that ability. They can probably also mine some of the Odessa approaches. They have 3 or 4 subs that can sortie in the Black Sea.
