    What a shit show

The progressives’ letter lectured Biden that “if there is a way to end the war while preserving a free and independent Ukraine, it is America’s responsibility to pursue every diplomatic avenue to support such a solution.” But where are these diplomatic avenues? What efforts should Biden “redouble” to seek “a realistic framework for a ceasefire”?

Now, in her withdrawal statement, Jayapal writes that she and the other progressives support diplomacy only “after Ukrainian victory.” The letter dated 24 hours earlier contained no such declaration or anything remotely resembling it.

Russia's special brand of corruption has several advantages for funding reparations. Their oil industry recently produced $1B in revenue per day, and almost all the profit was siphoned off for dachas, yachts, and personal foreign investments. None of that benefited Russians, besides a few at the top. Those few at the top are heavily sanctioned, so the grift is broken, war or no. The oil industry profits are free money that can be used to rebuild Ukraine, without depriving Russia any more than its autocracy already has.

This may have a secondary benefit of diversifying economic development in Russia, making it harder for a future would-be autocrat to steal the nation's industrial spoils. Several strong industries together can form a political bloc and better resist autocratic grift, and encourage the leadership to develop the economy and tax base. In the end, perhaps the oil curse can be broken.

    - There's a Russian anti-war group calling themselves Stop the Wagon. Simple and to the point. They sabotage railways between Russia and Belarus, & Ukraine. They've been at it since June.

    - Meanwhile the Russian military is fully embracing Darwinism. With little training before being sent to war, they estimate most of the recently mobilized troops will end up captured or casualties but those that survive will become hardened effective soldiers. It's an absolutely cruel and barbarous training system.

    - Mobilization as a severe form of punishment. Russia’s oldest university in St Petersburg applaud and cheer a professor who has been fired for taking part in anti-war protests. Denis Skopin spent 10 days in jail and was given a summons to the military recruitment office:

Great read. Shows how important Balaklia was to the turning point. Reuters gets accused of complicity but that’s why they generally have universal journalism.

Reuters was accused of complicity in this conflict?

I have noticed they are sometimes exceedingly lenient in their China reporting.

Damn, that was interesting. First hand view of how poorly the orcs are equipped

Sorta feel bad for the officer who kept the journal. There's enough there to identify him

Why would Russia take (steal) statues and monuments from Kherson?

Seems like an admission of defeat.

It was leadership directive but yeah, ubiquitous behavior.

"MOSCOW (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin says Moscow has no intention of using nuclear weapons in Ukraine."

In Kremlin speak this sounds like Moscow has every intention of using nuclear weapons in Ukraine. But maybe the serial liar and mass murderer is telling the truth this time. Today's speech was obviously meant as an appeal to new-right-reactionaries in the United States and Europe. His best hope for cutting Western aid to Ukraine. So a no-nuke message was probably meant to placate an otherwise universal concern.

Umm, China? Don’t get me wrong I hate their system and to me it is a terrifying system that I’d never want to live under, but are they not successful? Are they not Communist? You can argue that their economy is not communist in the image of Marx, Lenin, Stalin, etc. but…
