    Sounds like they’re still pushing.

Extreme bravery is happening every second on the frontlines in Ukraine.

Heaviest combat seen in recent history is happening right now.

Pass a thought to the soldiers tonight.

Did you see the video released by Russia where the Russian General was telling the convicts that if they joined the Wagner Group and fought on the front they must not rape and pillage? That was timely propaganda released to present as a defense at the war crimes trials.

prighozin is a war criminal, not a general, who heads a mercenary force of rapists and murderers. There is no torture his shitbags have handed out on the innocent that is worthy of ending his life

Every single Ukrainian and other non Russian/Belarus human killed or injured in this conflict is a war crime. Russia had no justification for this incursion/attack/onslaught. ZERO! NONE!

See Putin's relationship with Patriarch Kirill. See also recent Russian TV looking for someone to blame, someone not-Putin, who "misled" the perfect king. Most Russians may not know they could want something else. So we can hope for change, but we can't expect it.

On the restoring the empire context, I think there are religious overtones here as well. (Or I've been reading propagandist history). The story goes that Russian Christendom arose near where Bulgaria is and spread north, with some very important events in both Kyiv and Moscow. Like the Euro Christians and the Crusades, there's a religious imperative to reclaim roots, to validate identity. When Putin says Ukraine is Russia, that is true in the sacred realm*. Extending Russian-ness over Ukraine increases Putin's legitimacy by removing the heretics. Removing Putin doesn't change this. The next leader doesn't have to step into his role, but it's a natural thing to do.

    * It's not true in Ukraine. Ukrainians have a separate identity and view of history, hence the occupation's need for cultural genocide.

I'm not a historian, and history itself fits a narrative.
Here's a Yale history prof lecturing on this topic this semester. His lectures are good so far, I'm going to watch them all.

FWIW yesterday David Petraeus said Russia does not have a chance of winning. He said the fundamentals have clearly shifted and Ukraine will prevail. Ukraine is so much better trained, better equipment etc. He believes over time they could even take back Crimea. He said it is too late for Russia to begin a call up to be effective in part due to lack of equipment, vehicles and the impact of sanctions hampering their manufacturing base. Also there is now an significant insurgency behind the Russian lines so fighting two fronts.

Not many remember that it was the USA that rendered The World Court useless when we refused to show up after we mined Nicaragua's harbors..

Large difference in the history of the conflict, motivation for invasion (numerous legitimate ancillary reasons to depose Sadam in addition to the main illegitimate motivation) intended endgame, tactics used, etc. Russias invasion of Crimea and other "unofficial" activities in Ukraine in 2014 would be a lot more similar, but the last 6months are very different.

Regardless, a Ukrainian win would be a win for anti-colonialism and anti-imperialism. There's a weird contingent on the far left in America and Europe who don't seem to understand that basic fact.

Reports from Izyum suggest that the mass graves are largely the victims of the shelling. Mass graves make sense. So many bodies with so little time. The reports of Rapes, Torture and Executions make sense historically as well.

Shameful atrocities and deliberate genocide on this scale are straight out of the SS playbook. Russia pursued a policy of extermination in Izyum and elsewhere. That's a fact whether the Russian military directly targeted civilian infrastructure, civilian houses and apartments, for bombardment or when they shot people, with their hands bound, in the back of the head. Russia’s war is genocidal from inception and is genocidal in practice.
