it seems like the A10 could make a difference in Bakhmut but they do require escorts if russia figures out combined arms at all, no? if yes, do they have any air force that could protect the warthogs? the 4 polish migs are probably not enough but i am not a general. This spring push is going to begin pretty soon and it’d be great to see russia advance towards Moscow for great victory. Where are the rest of the Himars and Abrams, LFG.
I was also thinking about this Raptor, I wonder if China encouraged it at all as payback for their shitty balloon. I can only hope it can detonate as soon as it’s onboard that salvage ship. But, if they can be armed with hellfire maybe a sidewinder or two would keep the pests away.

Fuck the drone. It's got self-destruct. Let the sad little Russians beat their chests over such a magnificent victory.
The A10 is strictly an air2ground aircraft. It needs air superiority. Like the Stuka, they're sitting ducks for even 3rd-rate Russian fighters [missiles].
A10s are only still around because we've spent the last 2 decades strafing dirt-dwelling theocrats who lack toilet paper technology, much less supersonic air power. That said, A10s can grind an armoured column to dog food, all they need is top cover and enough depleted uranium to keep the guns hot.

Despite the constant rumors of their demise, there are ongoing upgrades to the A-10, as if they might hang around a bit longer. We may not be so anxious to be rid of them--possibly because they've started to look more useful lately.
On the upside, the Reaper (Raptor is a fighter) went straight into the ocean at the fastest speed achievable, given the prop damage (ETA: I put the over/under around 600 mph). Likely as the last step in a preprogrammed sequence that started with wiping memory/overloading select circuits etc. The (many, many) pieces sink pretty quickly when that happens and salt water is likely to solve any remaining issues before they find many of them.Last edited by jono; 03-18-2023 at 07:54 PM.

Is this one of those situations where it's a better than nothing scenario? It doesn't sound like an A-10 would last long in Ukraine. But maybe the Ukrainian AF gets a bit of luck and takes out some tanks and thrashes a few trenches before they get shot down.
I read that those 30mm cannons didn't do so well taking out tanks in Iraq or armored vehicles in Afghanistan. It was the Hellfires that did most of the tank busting."We don't beat the reaper by living longer, we beat the reaper by living well and living fully." - Randy Pausch

The A10s are vulnerable to not only air to air missiles, but also SAMs and MANPADS. The Ukrainians themselves have gone on record saying they don’t want A10s, although that could be because they were told at the time they wouldn’t get them.
A pilot’s life is worth a lot more than some Wagner convict in a trench, just due to all they training that was invested in him. And airplanes are more expensive than tanks, although the primary consideration should be the pilots life.
Did Ukraine ever get that heavier version of the switchblade drones that can take out armor? That seems to me to be what’s really needed to take on tanks. Need to ramp up production on those asap.
Or just get serious about this and send some F35s. Although I guess we probably don’t want to give the Russians training on how to fight them.

Up till now most recruits have been coming from poorer, rural areas, from what I’ve seen. Will the war remain popular if the more fortunate class is forced to send their kids to die?

It means China's gonna arm them. Better stock up on Chinesium, because USA is about to deflate China's economy like a sad little wrinkled balloon.

It could go in the opposite direction WRT China. China may well see this an opportunity to sideline the U.S:
- China thinks the Russian invasion will continue b/c there's no Western plan to stop it
- China believes there's no plan to stop the war b/c ironically Trump and Desantis project weakness by signalling to Putin that if he stay with it long enough, he's gonna win
- When American Presidential candidates deny that Ukraine matters, they're telling the world America will not be an effective peacemaker
- China also believes Russia cannot win its war
- Neither will China help them win
- China has made it clear sovereignty must be respected
- China is saying Russia can't win, Ukraine can't win, and America can't solve problems
- China is positioning itself as an essential peacemaker
- China recently brokered an agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia to normalize relations, something China believes America could not accomplish
- To use a Chinese metaphor, “China is entering the ocean” meaning China expects its role as superpower and mediator to only grow
- We are talking about Global China. China sees itself as becoming ubiquitous with Chinese influence everywhere

From China's perspective there is no sovereignty issue in the case of Taiwan. As with Hong Kong, Xi believes Taiwan is China (the official CCP stance since Taiwan's inception) and therefore there is no disconnect.

There's a Ukrainian plan to stop it, yo?

Ukraine can and will win this war. Xi can't necessarily sense that from his ivory tower, but he's gotta know Step 1 for the Ukes is to kick the Russians out, one way or another. Then we can talk about DMZs and repatriating thousands of Ukrainian children, among other things.
