'The Ukraine' is like that Family Guy cool wHip episode.

In English it used to be correct to use the definite article, but because of how Soviets used it in Russian it's now considered incorrect (I'm assuming Putin Russians still use the definite article). At some point the Ukrainians themselves asked English speakers to switch from using 'the,' so it's no longer standard.

In the long run, who really gives a shit where Donetsk and Luhansk send their tax money? A majority of the residents there seem to want to send it to Moscow, so okay, fine. If that's where it stops I can't get too worked up in righteous indignation about it.

My main concern right now is somebody doing something stupid and causing the shit to mutate and grow. If that does happen I bet it will be on the cyber front. An attack on Russia, even a rogue one, would probably trigger an outsized response and from there it's hold the fuck on.

Truth to that, but I have to say that I have been fascinated watching all of the live feed, photos, and videos pouring online right now from the conflict. Having the vantage point of local Ukrainians streamed in your own household (as opposed to a 24/7 news station) definitely shows modern conflict in a different light than, say, 2003.

It probably also hits a little different when the former Soviet Union invades a European nation in an act of aggression, triggering what could possibly become the worst conflict in Europe since Yugoslavia’s breakup in the late 90s.

I’m basically struck dumb with fascination at this point.

I don't know if/where you ski, it just seems no one has ever actually seen you anywhere. But West is a decent local hill with a very good race program, FWIW (and IME very few of these kids ever end up doing masters racing after college racing, etc.--not sure why you'd denigrate those that do).

Don't think Biden skis, and I kind of assume Putin has at least been on skis (he's a terrible, terrible hockey player).
