In Luhansk the Russians have thier supply lines cut and are threatened with encirclement which will force retreat to Severodonetsk.

I think UKR took 1000+sqkm in the last 24 hours.

If momentum continues, if UKR can take Kherson before winter, it will be a massive strategic defeat for Russia. Svatove also seems quite achievable. The next sensible push would be a spring push to Melitopol.
This is amazing. Keep pushing Ukraine!

So, if it's rained recently and there's mud, there's pretty much one passable road for heavy vehicles. If it hasn't rained, cross-country is passable for tracked vehicles. Whether it's passable for wheeled vehicles depends what the farmers have been doing - doesn't take too many plow passes to turn rich soil into two feet of fine dust. Lotta yapping to say Ukraine fArmed Services may play a role.

troops like this will definitely turn the war for you Vladimir, send thousands more to their death.

Also good comedy today when Russia found out 1.5 million winter uniforms are “missing” from the warehouse. Sure. Anyways, surely that wouldn’t happen to weapons, right concerned este?
Just one of those M30a1 missiles or a few artillery rounds would take almost 100% of them out.

I wonder if they’re dead by the time we see these videos?

This is a weird war in the sense that it’s the first somewhat symmetrical war (surprisingly) of the digital age. Iraq 2 didn’t feature a whole lot of artillery exchanges and they certainly didn’t have a remotely cohesive military after the first few weeks. Afghanistan was the definition of asymmetrical. But this feels different in its composition and scope.

If those aforementioned numbers are to be believed, Russia has lost more soldiers since February than we did in the entire Vietnam war….that is a bloody thing. Yet we follow it on Twitter, here, etc. and it plays out a bit like a drama. You can get different footage from different sources almost in real time and the video available is stunning.

I’m having a hard time articulating this but it’s surreal knowing there’s a very intense, bloody, mechanized war going on, and we comment, cheer and lament from our couches on iPhones—-sort of like we’re watching a staged drama or sporting event. Not belittling our collective passion or beliefs, just feeling like the whole thing is a bit remarkable in a digital way.

    Anyhow, fuck Russia.

The normalizing of horrors as a result of that will be a significant problem. Russia's civilian support for war in general follows a generation of cheering on their team as the latest adventure plays out on TV, disbelief suspended and moral ambiguity (at best) denied. Obviously I prefer knowing which side I support and why, but this is not progress.

I've tried to reconcile the weirdness of it in my head and failed. Surreal is also the word I come up with.

Yea... the problem is that while Ukraine has morale and momentum, and the Russians have neither, there are some natural pauses that will likely occur in the Ukranian counteroffensive.

What could still happen before winter?

Can UKR push RU off the west bank of the Dnieper? Probably, but only if Russia will abandon Kherson instead of turning it into a Mariupol.

Can UKR push RU out of most of Norther Luhansk? Possible to likely.

Can UKR put Donetsk under siege? Probably.

The problem is that Russia still holds HUGE amounts (19%) of UKR territory and there are some major defensive barriers UKR is running into: rivers and larger urban areas. Assaulting across a massive river like the Dniepr into Kherson Oblast in the face of a prepared enemy is one of the hardest operations I could imagine short of assaulting a defended coast from blue water (only the US can do this). A contested cross river assault is something the Russians have failed at more than once in this campaign.

Russia will in the meanwhile be able to reinforce their lines with canon fodder, which works OK for meatgrinder operations that advantage the low-trained defender: defending a trench or city.

There will have to be a spring offensive and in the face of even larger Russian manpower. To defeat that it is best to cut off Russian forces.

To cut supply to those areas, UKR could start a new offensive in the spring thrusting south from Zaporizhzhia to seize Melitopol and the GLOC to Kherson and Crimea. This must be coupled with UKR striking the Kerch Bridge, which will really piss off Russia. Doing this, or even looking like they might be successful, will force Russia to rattle their sabers harder than ever and pull everything back from Kherson and Crimea in a fighting retreat to the Donbass, or they will be cut off and fight to the last, surrender, or go to the bargaining table.

Doesn't show the most recent Ukrainian gains, but shows the swath Russia controls and where the cities/roads are. Here https://www.instagram.com/p/CjO0UTmKjyk/?hl=en or Wikicommons and ISW have more detailed and up to date maps.

“ Soldier and civilian, they died in their tens of thousands because death had been concocted for them, morality hitched like a halter round the warhorse so that we could talk about 'target-rich environments' and 'collateral damage' - that most infantile of attempts to shake off the crime of killing - and report the victory parades, the tearing down of statues and the importance of peace.
Governments like it that way. They want their people to see war as a drama of opposites, good and evil, 'them' and 'us', victory or defeat. But war is primarily not about victory or defeat but about death and the infliction of death. It represents a total failure of the human spirit.”

    -Robert Fisk

I think this whole war porn thing gets a little harder for people when they stop and realize that maybe that young person getting snuffed out by a UAV delivered grenade on video might have been a poorly trained anti-war conscript pulled from their hiding spot in a refrigerator the week before and not an “Orc”. Same for the Russians who get snippets and realize they aren’t fighting “Nazis”.

The problem with the anti-war conscript narrative is polls and first hand accounts show Russian support for the war, just not for fighting in it themselves. It's not so much pro or anti anything as it is unthinking passivity that morphs into unthinking cruelty resulting in the mass slaughter of civilians. The Orc pejorative is well earned.
