It’s a Oaxacan version of Huevos Rancheros. Depths of flavor.

And si, mi Nina es muy fuerte! Rapida que yo.

Looks awesome, jonesing to go back. We stayed in Barrio Jalatlaco too. Little quieter late nights than right in Centro, slightly longer walks.

Stayed at Hotel Victoria before and after the race in 2021. I'm assuming they are doing the same this year. Very cool old school place in my opinion. Doesn't seem like there is anywhere to stay besides the actual camp up where the trails.

Do we get a trip report out of this TT?

Also, bumping up to ask if anyone has beta for bike tour operators that run more of a day to day shuttle/ride options rather than all inclusive with food and lodging. The idea being that a group of friends would like to go and ride while the wives stay in town and do whatever. We'd all like to stay together in town and eat wherever each night instead of having a full agenda. Ride 4ish days...

Yes! Sorry, I do owe a TR on this

    To answer ZZZ’s question above:

Definitely use Coyote Adeventuras. The dude who runs the place, Carlos, is super cool. Those dudes can ride.

I have his WhatsApp contact info, shoot me a PM if you’d like it.

Barbacoa at Lacolula. Going to the Sunday market is incredible. Oldest market in all of mesoamerica. We bought a rug from a weaver whose family has had the same stall for 6 generations

    Quick beta:

We flew on Aero Toucan from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido and back. It’s like $100US/person but saves a day of travel each way. And was an experience in its own right.

-when in Oaxaca city, I think you’d want to stay near or north-of the Zocalo. We stayed a few blocks south near Mercado Benito Juarez (suites de la parra) but only bc it was free w/ credit card points. It was a sweet hotel with a rooftop pool. But more fancy-pants places a few blocks north.

-we skipped the super fancy places (casa Oaxaca, etc) as they felt touristy and stuffy and pricey. Lots of incredible food at the markets and the mid-range restaurants.

-hire a guide for outings. I can’t recommend Coyote Adventuras enough.

-go to Lacoulula market and find the stalls with the goat barbacoa. Go for the Sunday market and don’t be in a hurry. It’s immense. And amazing.

It’s an awesome place. Sorry for the delayed (and brief) TR

Spent a Christmas week there in college days, late 70's I think. At the time it was relatively undiscovered so the food and drink wasn't fancy and chef-y, but so good. Stayed at a wonderful old-school hotel on the zocalo, had many beers and meals in the neighboring watering holes and the mercado was incredible. Did a Monte Alban visit as well as the nearby towns where rug making and the local black pottery was a thing.

First time I went to the mercado I couldn't figure out why everyone was staring at me all day. Found out later it was because I was wearing shorts which was, at the time, was apparently a very odd thing to do there.

Awesome, thanks for the report TT! Glad you hit up the mercado, that’s the real hot spot for food.

I checked out the website for Coyote Aventuras, I’ll probably reach out with some questions when I get serious about planning.

Many of my expat friends in Merida enjoy trips to Oaxaca, it's probably tied with Guanajuato/SMA for popularity for a week away from the Yucatan.

I've only been once, and holy shit, just realized that was 30 years ago. Spent a couple of nights with 2 random ex-pats. Thought it was super cool then, it looks as cool or cooler now! Want to go! And go back to Merida, since Tye just mentioned that place, that was also 30 years ago.

My friends and I do a international trip every year. This year it's scheduled for the first week of November and we are leaning towards Mexico - the advantages include short flights, no major time zone changes, and Día de Muertos.

We usually try to visit two cities (sometimes even two countries) in the week we have.

So land in city 1 on Sunday - leave there Wednesday morning and arrive in city 2 on Wednesday afternoon - then depart for home on Saturday (or Sunday if the flights allow an early enough return)

I'm thinking Oaxaca region 3 nights for Día de Muertos and then hop over to Mexico City for 3-4 nights. Or the reverse -4 in Oaxaca and 2-3 in Mexico City.

On these trips we have lazy mornings, do some sort of activity in the afternoon (may have to change this around and have siestas), try to eat interesting food in the evening, and then see what the local bars serve and where the night takes us.

For those of you that have been to both - any general advice on this schedule?

Totally doable. So you’d be in Oaxaca from the 31st through 2nd or so? That’d give you the bulk of Día de Muertos. Plenty to do both in the day and night in that timeframe. And Mexico City has lots to do as well obviously. Just eating and drinking at the hot spots would keep you satisfied for 3-4 days. The flight between the two is about an hour so it wont feel like a wasted day.

Wife and I did the reverse a couple of years ago, CDMX first and then Oaxaca. We were in CDMX for the F1 GP race and the James Bond parade and the city was fucking packed, like something to see, but too crowded to really enjoy. Advice for Mexico City stay somewhere like Roma Norte or Condessa, but try for a quieter street or one of the upper floors of a high rise on Paseo de la Reforma or Ave. Chapultepec. Mexicans love all night fireworks.
