    Rust abatement

Looking for suggestions on rust abatement in the rust belt.

In my beloved home state of Oregon they didn't salt the roads in winter. Maybe a little urea for black ice but salt was either banned or verboten somehow. I didn't realize how much I appreciated that until I moved to northern Minnesota.

Cars and trucks here look like they've been sprayed with acid and left to corrode. Fenders and bodywork are slowly returning to the earth from whence they came (coincidently only a few miles from here in one of the taconite mines probably) on so many 5-10 year old cars.

I have a beloved '02 Tundra in decent shape and we bought the wife a new Pilot this summer before moving out here. What can I do beyond frequent washing to keep the rust away? Got an undercarriage coating but it seems kinda weak sauce, I think they just sealed the seams in the pan. Replace every 5 years?

The shear volume of salt that I transport into the garage daily gives me major anxiety. You could roll up a $20 and snort it.

New Hampshire oil is becoming a nationwide thing.
They are supposed to spray inside rocker panels as well.
But that depends on the individual franchise doing it.

Heard some good things about this. But need to treat every few years. It’s not as good as truecoat.

Old timer told me you can also spray atf fluid everywhere

They may or not be similar.

A while back, I was looking into something similar and I found this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004NDDCKK...v_ov_lig_dp_it

"Fluid Film wool wax" or someshit.

IIRC it need to be applied seasonally/bi-seasonally and I was looking for something that wasn't too weird chemical. Never tried tho.

You can actually use Pam cooking spray but it wears off so you have to re-do it every month or so.

Penetrol is fine with some paints but you can't use 2K paints over it and a lot of cars use 2K paints so proceed with caution

Used to use a guy in southern vt, for the old hot oil treatment. That was the most effective way to keep em intact. Probably not the most environmentally friendly though. I always thought it odd when you approached him on the dirt road outside his shop heading both directions almost seemed paved a quarter mile in each direction! Hmmm. That shit worked.

I typically just use spray cans of rustproofer here in CO/UT, but my life experience growing up in Ohio tells me oil spraying is the way to go in places with actual rust. It definitely slows the inevitable.

It was hydraulic fluid the old timers used. My dad used to get it done - way more around than ATF from tractors needing it. General tips:
    1. Paint flakes - sand and prime it. Can't rust if it's not exposed. People usually let a bubble go and it just starts rotting out exponentially. Get it as soon as you see it.
    2. If you have a heated garage - rinse off every time. Melting snow+salt = mega corrosion cycle. Unheated - just clean it off every once in a while and make sure nothing's exposed.

If you have exposed frame, see if you can get this done - https://por15.com/
    It's magic and bulletproof.
Also with toyota frames - if you love the truck, even consider taking it off the frame to get sealed. Toyota rustproofing is absolutely garbage.

Yes. Lanolin based. Have someone else apply annually. If it works in the upstate it works in the 10,000 lakes state.

Do what a lot of your neighbors are doing. Get a "Winter Car". Keep the Tundra in the garage until spring.

Or treat and drive the tundra. In 2-4 years it will be your "Winter Car".

Fluid film works well. Bit of a smell after a long drive with a fresh application. In VT there are quite a few shops using it. I use it on my 4Runner and the shop that applies it knows how to get it into all parts of the frame. Basically seals everything up to keep oxygen from getting to the metal. Old rust stays but stops spreading.

Weekly cleanings help too. I go to the manual wash bays because roof boxes and automated ones don't mix. The manual ones are good because you can spray the shit out of the underbody and wheel wells.
