Well, today was fun. I think we got most of our snow between 9-11 AM. Easily 10cm an hour.

Off-piste was way better than I thought it was going to be, although we still need one more good storm to get the trees safely in play.

Somebody should definitely investigate Mont Chilly and report back.

Well done Paulster! Looks consistent as far as coverage goes. About 15 cms here but the wind left bare spots mixed with dense pow and flat light. Now the forecast is back to cold and no snow although today is showing rain as one of its components.

It was perfect. There was no wind whatsoever. Chair stopped for a moment and we noted how calm and pleasant it was with the snow falling and people hooting and hollering. Probably the best day ever there, and I'm not exaggerating.

Usually it's either Boomerang or Suicide (now Challenger, lame) that gets the snow as the wind scrapes it off the other, but this time it was all good. One chair not running so the entire eastern side was up for grabs if you knew where to go and how to traverse. I never in my life thought it would pay off having 'indsider' knowledge of that place. Go figure.

Been skiing there since I was 5 or 6, so that's (does math) 37 years. Yikes! This is what I remember when I was a kid - it was a big deal when they cut the new "Lover's Lane" run:

Well, everything melted yesterday and now it's -14 again. Looks like we're in a deep freeze for the next 2+ weeks. Time to sharpen those edges!!

Skating on the canal is way cool. If the huts are open, you must consume a Beavertail, preferably the "Killaloe Sunrise." On our first real date, my wife of 27 years and I skated on the canal, ate Beavertails, then went out for Thai food. We should probably repeat that experience before we need hip replacements.

It is time for you folks to meet the Snow Chair, the Hinterlandian version of a snow stake. For the last 12 years or so, I've been taking pictures of the chair on our deck throughout the ski season and posting them in a couple of ski discussion groups. I live just outside of Huntsville, so if you are heading this way, the chair will guide your skiing decisions.

Today's chair tells us that it is still low tide but improving gradually:

For reference purposes, here is the chair on Jan. 23 last year., with a more typical Muskoka snowpack We had a special visitor that day.

That's awesome! Please post chair on the reg. Need to know when it's safe to go out and learn how to use AT gear in the hinterlands. Will probably take a day off mid-week and just go fumble around by myself. Looking to practice going up, moreso than going down.

Here we go, first foray into the woods. Junkboard skis with no edges, deer-obsessed not-ready-for-off-leash dawg in a skijoring harness, Flexi leash clipped to my pack's waist belt, what could possibly go wrong?

We made it to Secret Hill! No turn turns were made due to the sketchiness of the dog setup but the snow cover is good. More snow coming down now.

Happy birthday and get out of those woods! Actually headed there this morning. I wonder if anything is un-groomed after the 10 cms we got yesterday?

Spent 5 days up north at Silent Lake PP and did some x-country skiing. Pretty cold the whole time and even saw minus 36 one morning. Nice to return home yesterday with a balmy minus 8 here in London.

Well, after about 688 days I finally made a return to alpine skiing with a trip up to Blue Mountain.

Last season I was overly covid cautious at the beginning of the season, then we had a lock down that closed all resorts for few weeks, and when they reopened midway through the winter I was sidelined with a nasty wrist sprain I got nordic skiing.

Fresh snow was a nice surprise. Great coverage and no ice. Good times. Only got one lame pic before the cold killed my mobiles battery.

Looks like next Thursday will be hot and spicy in Ontario - southern and Huntsville areas alike. Aiming to get out in the woods on Feb 4 but we will see how the weather will affect my drive.

Is Glen Eden still doing the book a slot stuff? My brother in Oakville mentioned getting together there for a night of skiing.

The weather next week looks interesting. Thought about some camping during the warmup but wife's specialist wants a meeting right in the middle. Is what it is.

Yes, and it's very annoying this year. It fills up, FAST. Tons of no-shows, and they sent out an email to all pass holders saying to not do this and "they may take further action."

Basically nights are always full - today is a PA day and has been full for a week (entire day) so my dad can't take the kids skiing. This is even more frustrating since we all have season passes that were not any cheaper than before, and now we can't use them. (EDIT: so now I see this morning there are some slots available. THANKS - they've made other plans already)

Day tickets can be bought 5 days in advance, and pass holders can book time slots 10 days in advance. Our kids are in lessons so they don't need reservations on Saturdays, but for the wife and I to ski I need to set a reminder to book our times every Thursday morning first thing.

Place isn't even crowded, so they either need to up the capacity or get rid of this booking system altogether. I get that it's COVID and all, but maybe don't sell a million passes if you can't handle people actually using them...

There are workarounds, though. How it's supposed to work is you have a pass but you still need a normal ticket from the booth. You show them your email bar code (I just give them my phone number which works even better), then they print tickets and give 'em to you. For the past 3 weeks I have just stuffed these in my pocket and not put them on. Nobody seems to check or care.

Currently next Thursday shows completely full from 3pm-6:30pm. Same for next Friday 2:30-7:30pm. How about Wednesday you ask? Full from 2:50-6:50. What a joke.

I have had good results, however, sending an email to them expressing my dismay at the always-booked times at the beginning of the season. They seemed receptive to squeezing me in should I run in to any difficulties - I just need to go to the visitors center and drop some lady's name.

    Wow. What a bullshit policy.

Here are they are limiting the number of day tickets but there's no restrictions for when you can use your pass.

It's nothing to do with "shitty Toronto," it's just the place is run by dimwits. The annual first lesson day shitshow makes this evident. Well, maybe that is "shitty Toronto," I dunno.

You sure do have a lot of people living on your doorstep. Part of the problem. I do miss living there but real estate chased us out. One of our kids left last month and moved to the Soo. Looking forward to a visit and hitting Searchmont.

For sure, but I can get limiting day pass sales by time slots. Having to reserve a spot to use my season pass that was the same or more expensive than last year is a joke.

Anyway, just mounting some AT bindings and setting skins up this weekend. Should be able to escape the crowds and get up north in to the woods next week hopefully. If that storm hits the way it's supposed to, I'll be stuck here in suburbia.
