Just got back from Glen Eden. They somehow managed to make 4" of new snow icy. The little spots at the edges where they didn't groom felt glorious. Should've just left it alone!
Couldn't find their suggestion box.

Suggestion box? See that round receptacle in the corner?
So I managed to get out there myself this morning and agree that the conditions were a little less than ideal. Combined with flat light it wasn't much fun. Some of the rollovers at the bottom were interesting when you couldn't see them. You might have seen a few telewhackers out there. Guilty.

Yesterday at Blue was great, snowed the entire afternoon and smaller crowds.
Upper glades were virtually untouched.
The drive there and back was hellish. I've been driving up to Collingwood for over 20 years. I've been through during and after ice storms, massive snow falls etc but have never seen worse conditions than yesterday. Not a pile of snow just extremely greasy.
Eg, on 124 N on the slight rise right at Devils Glen, multiple trucks were stuck and or ditched. Southbound traffic was stopped and backed up maybe a km. A single OPP guy standing around, no other emergency vehicles or tows.
Coming back on Airport S, right after crossing Hockley Valley Dr and going up the escarpment - multiple vehicles stuck, not able to crest the hill. I saw this from way back so pulled over and waited until no one was ahead of me - then gunned it up the hill but I too lost momentum and got stuck. Eventually made it up thankfully, many didn't. Always a laugh when you see a tow truck stuck in the the ditch up there.
Car looked a little worse for wear when i finally made it home.

Successful day up in the hinterlands. More vert would be nice, but this is Ontario after all. At least I got really good at putting on and taking off the skins. Gorgeous day out there!

I was alone for about an hour or so, then there was one other guy out on the main section for a bit. Faster skinner than me, didn’t get his name.
When I was having lunch at the car I saw Anne and Ian who were heading over to the new “Hemlock Heaven.” Will check that out next time if I can find it.
TBar line was cool, some good turns in there. Liked the old photos in the little warming cabin up top as well. I figure I did somewhere between 7-10 runs. I’m very tired.
Will try to get out to help with glading/maintenance some time, as that’s the best way to get terrain intel dialled in I assume.
When did that T-Bar stop running? Those trees that have taken back the line look pretty established.

Mt. St. Louis today with the wife and kids and another family. Awesome day - ended up doing 19 runs, didn’t think the kids (7 and 9) had it in them. Must be the downright tropical temps we’re experiencing now. -5 is so much nicer than -20!
Place got pretty busy after lunch, and their lift line queues are a mess. Some first day ever skier in jeans ran in to me at the bottom of Moonstone. Scratched my skis all up! Just glad he crashed in to me and not one of the kids.
Thus ends 4 days in a row of Ontario glory for me. Time to head west for a bit. Doesn’t seem to want to snow in BC all that much but who cares - if they only knew what I’m used to dealing with…

The Hinterlandians had a ski touring event way out in the boonies on Saturday. Attendance was limited and registration was full before I connected with you cats. Keep Twigfest on your radar for 2023! Though I have to say that putting your boots on at the car at -28 is one of times you say, "why did we agree to do this?" Anyhoo it was fun once we got moving and although the snow was pretty funky, a good day was had by all. There were folks from 15 to 64, on snowboards, tele gear, nordic touring skis and AT gear. Everybody got along! At the end of it we celebrated with some home brewed Moosemilk on a socially distanced shotski:

'Twig Fest' and socially distanced shot ski, very cool stuff. I've been following along with the touring theme this year and am close to putting something together. Can't wait, appreciate the inspiration. Paulster you too, props for documenting your first round and enjoy your time west.

If you're looking to get a setup put together I bought some used Dukes from a guy out in BC, but couldn't use them because they're the small version and were about 4mm too short for my big-ass boots. One of the bindings is brand new and never used (was a warranty replacement) and both work perfectly. Anyway let me know if you think you might like them, I'd just sell them for the same price I paid. Rather deal with an Ontario person vs. someone from parts unknown.
Just get some frame bindings, a pair of skins, and slap it all on some old skis and you're golden. To start out, at least - this was my thinking.

Here are a few more images from Twigfest to entice you for next time.
The chair report, on the day before Twigfest. What you can't see the unconsolidated nature of the snow, which made breaking trail a challenge and downhill travel very interesting:
Organizer and camp manager Jeff LeChef explains the order of the day. His hot tent was key to the day's success, having a warm-up spot is such a bonus (you know, like a base lodge?):
As one of the designated tour leaders, I was issued a special package containing a map, the site safety plan and a lot of chocolate. The trusty moosehide mitts saved the day for my hands:
I don't have any pictures of people actually heading downhill but here we are heading uphill on a beautiful cold day:
It was a great day of brotherly and sisterly love between the snowboard, AT and tele crowds (in that order in this image):

Looks like it was a beauty of a day.
Paulster for the dukes I'm assuming they'd be too small for me as well, my bsl is 338mm, lmk if I'm mistaken.
First night skiing excursion in awhile last night at BM. I've been getting really lucky with conditions there and last night was pretty good but the ice sheets are starting to form, as well as some spring style brown patches.

Concrete corduroy this morning. Too bad that yesterday's snow melted into the ground before freezing solid. At least the grooming was consistent. Edgeable but noisy as a jet plane.

This weekend, four of the Muskoka crew drove seven hours north of Huntsville to ski the legendary glades and northern pow at Bellevue Valley Lodge. By the looks of this picture (not mine but Eric B's) it looks like the long haul was worth it:

Maybe another powder day later this week. What a shite show roller coaster bout of winter headed our way. Starting to think the fat lady is warming up in the wings. Can we make it to April?

Yeah Friday is looking good from here. Making it to April would be an absolute dream, let's hope for the best. Been a great year for snow quality on both nordic and real lol skis.
Quick afternoon session at BM today.
Looked like they got a significant snowfall in the last 12 hours, trees looked and skied glorious. Easily a foot deep untouched in a few very small glade sections.
Some of the heavily trafficked 'cross' trails that connect between the main lifts were getting some wild ass bumps and burms worn into them by the late afternoon. Full on carnage on L Hill and Village Way. You could just stop and watch people flailing about going down, crashes everywhere complete with people doing the walk-down-of-shame, people up top frozen in fear trying to work out some sort of manageable line, dudes shimmying down on their butts etc. Add in some near flat light and it was some tricky stuff.
Not trying to trivialize the risk of people falling in adverse conditions, it was pretty soft except for some obvious icy patches, it was just fun stuff all around and it seemed most were enjoying the challenge. Really wished I recorded a bit of a video. Wild stuff.
Knees and ankles are now making all sorts of sounds. M1's were about the worst ski choice for that stuff.
Lifts lines went from the heaviest I've seen this year (still really not bad at all, just the straight front ~15' or 20' section of the coral was full once) vs walk ups by 6ish.

Current weather brought this to mind...

Yeah 325mm is the max. I'll try to sell them in gear swap thread.
Just got back from out west. Snow is needed there as well. Gonna be a dry summer in the interior. Maybe Ontario pow day tomorrow? All I ever really hope for is one last warm ski weekend after March break. By the time April rolls around I'm worrying about getting the outdoor greenery started...
Back to BC in a month. Winter continues. Please snow.
