A couple of weeks ago, I lost a fishing pole to the Jordanelle reservoir. Some may have read my post. Recently, I was speaking to a friend about a camping trip that my wife and I were planning up around Henry's Fork.
He has never been and now wants to go. This morning I was working in the yard when Fedex stopped by. This was delivered. What a gift!!! I had no idea that it was coming.




It is truly a beautiful rod. Bamboo. Extra shaft! 7' 4wt. I am blown away. I wish that I was not such a fly fishing Jong, so I could properly appreciate it in action.

Uh wow, that's fucking incredible man, congrats!!

Let me know if you ever want to get out, I'll take you. I'm a jong too but I have been the beneficiary of so much kindness from SFB and others here. It's a ton of fun

Floated the mud river, kiddies got needed river miles. We pretended we didn’t know we wouldn’t be catching shit and threw stuff to entertain ourselves and keep in practice.

Got soaked the first day, it was a sufferfest till the take-out.



The C sucks when Red Creek is flowing.



We humored ourselves and threw large dries.

Brought one of the locals some bananas for her rabbit, the kiddies got to pet it and see baby pictures.



Boblandia is quickly becoming one of my favorite places on earth…

Well, I don't generally carry a cell, but I bought a burner while I was on the road this summer, and brought it along fishing so I could check the time and maybe take a picture if need be. I didn't check to see if there was room for further pictures, which is my very sad reason for not having a fine picture of me with today's catch.

I returned to the same hole, in which I'd caught my all-time biggest trout fish a few weeks back. When I got there around 4pm today, someone else was there fishing in the hole, so I went down stream, and tried for a couple hours with nary a bite. The sun had gone behind the western side of the canyon, and the fish started to occasionally rise. I decided to go see if the hole was available, and it was. I was on the opposite side of the creek from my previous catch there, and I was able to get very close to where my previous success had struck.

The fish began rising fast and furious, it was surreal, and frustrating, they were mostly all rising in a area of about five by five feet. I missed a couple strikes on a dry renegade, then they stopped taking it, so I tried a royal wulff, and though I had fish rising within inches of it, they did not take. I actually managed to hit a fish in the face as it surfaced, but it was after something unseen.

Then it started raining. Being frustrated that they weren't taking what I was casting, and having the rain coming down as the dusk was gathering, I decided to call it, and made my way back along the base of the rock wall that the big pool is up against, and across the creek. But I couldn't bring myself to leave yet, since they were still rising. After trying another couple flies that did not work, I tied the renegade back on.

On the second or third cast I got a strike, and when I set the hook it felt solid and unyielding. When I got the fish close to shore I saw that it was bigger than I had hoped, with the same brilliant orange under belly, and gill slashes as the last one I'd caught there. I managed to wrangle it into my net, tried to take a picture (I learned later that I failed). I didn't have a measuring tape, so I used the span of my right hand as a measure, and was pleased that the fish was two full spans long, a full 18", which is one monster of a cutthroat. Believe it or not.

Brown’s Park is filled with history, and the book he’d left me was a signed first copy of a telling of some of that history.

The note and book will be a keepsake out there for years.

Brown’s Park is filled with history, and the book he’d left me was a signed first copy of a telling of some of that history.

The note and book will be a keepsake out there for years.

Did the author grow up on the Allen family ranch just down from Jarvie's place? I believe they also owned the Jarvie ranch for a couple years in 40's.

Been spending more and more time fishing since Dibs and Bob got me into it and showed me the ropes out on the Green. I live ten minutes from the lower Weber, but it has taken me a bit of time to figure out where the fish hide & what they like to eat.

I'm still shit at this, but learning how to fly fish has been incredibly rewarding.

Yesterday I decided to test the waters of Rattlesnake Creek which empties into the Clark Fork right here in Missoula. However, instead of fishing the lower part in town (the banks are cemented in places, and are often someone's back yard), I went up into the wilderness beyond the closed section (the Rattlesnake feeds Missoula's drinking water aquifer).

Stupid Google said it was less than two miles, it turned out to be six, however I was determined, and made it to the fishing in a couple hours or so. I fished up about a half a mile of creek before needing to leave, and get out of the woods before dark. The creek was very shallow, and most deeper sections yielded lively surface strikes from mostly tiny fish.

It's a pretty little creek, but there is a huge amount of algae anywhere that was in the sun much of the day, earlier in the year would be better I expect. If I did it again, I would ride a bike up there, because the thirteen miles or so I hiked, completely kicked my ass, and now I'm all sore and achy. So long Rattlesnake, until next time.

The recent rains had the Blackfoot up and milky:



I took a pic of the first fish of the day, the other two were a bit bigger, but I didn't feel like getting out the camera.



A raft came down and landed a big fish twenty yards in front of me. It took a while for them to land it, it was entertaining to watch, huge brown trout maybe 20+ inches, it had his rod bowed like a U.

End of the day I felt like pulling out the camera. The Big milky (currently) Blackfoot:



As I headed back down the river, it seemed to be getting cloudier, the river that is.

If you remember here on TGR two+ years ago I was enrolled in a winter fly tying class in Big Sky. Then covid hit…. Fast forward 2+ years and now I’m living in Northern Wisconsin, and amazingly the guy who was my instructor in Big Sky is now a Musky guide here in Wisconsin.

Harry, I'll be in Hayward in a few weeks, for a few days. If I see your pram I'll throw a beer at it.

In the small world of fly fishing, underoos fished with my non-mag musky buddy yesterday. Can’t wait to see the youtube on this !

Today I went to the same place I caught an 18" cutthroat last week. On my first cast, with an October caddis, I got this guy:



I tried longer with the same fly, but it started to get hard to see it, as the reflection of the setting sun off the rocks made it hard to see the orange fly, so I tried various other flies, getting a bite on one or two of them, then once the sun had left the water fully in shadow, I went back to the October, and when I pulled it back on a retrieve, it felt like I'd got snagged, then I saw the orange flash of a big cutty. Seventeen inches big.

Nice cutt. I've found myself going to hi-vis & parachute versions of my favorites for the glare & around dusk as my eyesight has gotten shittier.
