gots a hair up my struck out and just donated more $$ to the rec.gov river permit lotto scam butts and decided to go to i sure aint beatin em maybe i can join white water guide school
i picked mild to wilds cause they were sposed to do an overnighter on ruby horsetheif and deso
loaded the hog and headed down to moabs
stopped at the scofield and fucked a few in the face

    dredged up a winterkill zombie

rolled into moab bout 420 on a thursday hopin for a river camp
finally found it down at onion creek

    guide school was cool
havin a couple decades on the sticks most in a boat thats older than most of my new young river friends sure helped me.
rowin from the trunks is the funks, but with a strong paddle crew them rafts can move.
did shit ive been trying not to do cause it sucks
like hump boats navy seal style

intentionally exit the boat to swim rapids

place your watercraft in a wrong side down position

    and fix that issuie

which speakin from oh fucks experience

are really not bad things to practice and aints gonna hurt ya crack open that can of calm once the shits hit the spinning blades
Ran a few days of variations of the moab co rv dailys

saw a few poopers breach the chocolate milks
and in case you wanted some what kind of fish are in the rivers

i think the phrase is flora and fauna cultural interpretation
road tripped to durango to float the lower animas thru town
cleaver rapid is a blast ran clean
bit spooky otherwise but thankfully we didnt flip

10 pots shops in that town
well yeah i caught a buzz
and a nasty chest cold from one of the guides
ruby overnighter turned into a 25 miler day trip on the big motorized j rig
which was a nice break as the night before was in the top 5 worst nights ive spent in a tent
total wind fuck of blowing sand and hot as fuck
    saw some poopers and baldies

a cool canyon ill be back to

    the crew

had a day off really wanted to float the tuparware mothership down the daily
couldnt find a co pilot or cheap shuttle
    and i remembered i was a fisherman
so i drove down and threw in on kens lake and exercised some snirt's

    aka stocked nine inch troots

fun to bend the whippy sticks and not fight the wind and currents in the shadow of the la sals

Pretty good thread the past few days. Love the raft flipping.

June is my favorite month to fish in Montana. Runoff will be big this year but hopefully things settle in as I have a lot of guests coming off and on all month.

Great pictures Swimmy, but did you give away a fishing secret? I have heard "match the hatch" many times, but "match the blooms?" May the rivers run clear soon in MT.

Huge news out of Alcova with BLM closing the largest land purchase in the history of WY. 8.8 miles of the north platte (river right) is now public. The era of GRA guides policing your anchor is over! This is awesome!

With that out of the way, here is the story. If you remember here on TGR two+ years ago I was enrolled in a winter fly tying class in Big Sky. Then covid hit…. Fast forward 2+ years and now I’m living in Northern Wisconsin, and amazingly the guy who was my instructor in Big Sky is now a Musky guide here in Wisconsin. We linked up this morning and I had a great day hunting musky with him.

Unlike any kind of fly fishing I have ever done before.
Fly = no tiny midges, we used a baby duckling imitation.
Leader = no 5X tippet, we used steel cable.
Rod = no 4 piece 5 wt, we used 1 piece 12 wt.
    Net = HUGE.
Tools = no hemostat and nippers, vice grips and wire cutters.
We were on “River X”, I’m not naming it, but it’s only a mile from my island.
You do this weird Figure-8 thing when you strip your lure up to the boat with only a foot of line out, you shove your rod tip straight down in the water and use both hands on the butt and stir it in a figure-8, and sure enough that’s how I caught this monster.

I am hooked, Musky fishing is addictive. I had so much fun today I’m still buzzing.

^^^ That is awesome Harry! When I lived in MN all I fished were Muskie; once you catch one, everything else is boring.

Figure eight works, as does “slamming” your lure on the surface to piss them off. Caught a huge beast on Lake of the Woods by repeatedly slamming the surface until he couldn’t stand it.

Definitely more like hunting than fishing!

Yeah, Harry! I miss those things. Need to get back to the homeland for fishing more than I do. Hope we can get in a day sometime this summer if I get back there for any length of time.

Rule #1 for musky nets = if the net fits SFB’s dog, it’s big enough for a musky.

in saltwater anything swimming the size of SFB's dog it was cockpit harpoon time if it was a keeper or snap the hook out with a gaff or cut the line if it was a throw back. That net looked like the cod end on a mid water trawl.
