She was on TV just the other day, completely sharp and looking great and talking about how lucky she was to be in such good health and looking forward to her birthday.

cngrats to the golden girls cast. all but rue mclanahan made it mid 80s or better. most of them still going 15 years past the series final year in the 90s.

I never followed her, but in the paper today there was a story about how she got a lot of shit for having a black dancer on her show in the 50's. She refused to get rid of him and probably had the show canceled as a result. The dancer, Art Duncan, credited Betty with giving him his break into TV. (He wound up on the Lawrence Welk show for decades so the story doesn't have an entirely happy ending.)

(I always got a kick out of Welk's cast being called the Champagne Music Makers, when Welk was a serious polka musician before TV and champagne is not the beverage I associate with polka.)
