What is wrong with patrollers collectively arguing that they should be paid commensurate with the unique skills they possess? It's a race to the bottom and the only way to stop that is collective bargaining. Patrollers working in Washington and California have to live in some of most expensive places on earth, and the customers of these resorts are some of the wealthiest people on earth. Or if you prefer Subway sandwich artists make more than you, and some corporate schmuck get a bigger year end bonus for exploiting patrolers just in it for the lifestyle, that's your prerogative.

In union world in the West, Washington, Oregon, California, and Alaska are all pro-union states, and have laws that reflect that. Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Utah, anti-union. Colorado more in the middle. So not surprised with the anti-union sentiment coming out of Utah. And even though Vail is headquartered in CO, the applicable union laws would be the state the resort is in.

So it's clear some semi retired troller(s) will cross the picket line to keep livin' the life.

    You a patroller?
    If not, STFU.
What do you know about unions, anyhow?

2$ or even 5$ an hour more don't mean shit.
Gotta figure a way to earn more either summer or winter to make the family thing and owning a piece of the USA happen.

Ain't gonna happen by patrollers striking.
    (two beers in, now).

I'm just some idiot who believes if the business owners can organize to try to keep wages low, the workers should be able to organize and collectively bargain in their favor regarding wages and benefits. I'll never STFU about that position..

And, I'm good with paying more for the product where everyone earns a living wage with healthcare coverage..

Why are you so gung ho to carry their water? What's it to you of you're retired?

Far as I'm concerned alla you weighing in that aren't trollers are just talking outta yer ass.
The only folks that oughta have an opinion here are professional ski patrollers.

    It'd ruin the lifestyle.
    And that's what patrolling is.
It's a lifestyle that doesn't pay well but the benefits aren't measured in dollars.
And one is not beholding to anyone, let alone a fucking union.
If one wants more money, go do something else.

So for all you non patrollers weighing in: STFU.
No idea what you are talking about.

    Not go to concerts, etc?
Grow a lot of their own food?
Drive cars that cost $4,000 or less?
Caretake some rich guys VRBO rental?
The list goes on how to make it work.
We raised a family in employee housing for 20 and care took someone else's place for another 10 years. Kids lived in bunks in a 5'x12' closet for 20 years. No complaints from them to grow up at Snowbird. The savings on rent and utilities were a big part of our success.
    Lotta sacrifices, sure.

Biggest difference now is the price of real estate and trying to own a piece of the USA.
Got me on that one with how to make that work these days.
Retired? Not exactly. Just saying I don't need to work.
I still fill in when needed, making class 4 avalanches and skiing powder in closed areas the last ten days. Still enjoying the lifestyle.
One does need to work at some bullshit good paying summer jobs for 10-12 years to get money ahead, least I did.

    Ohhhh nice edit^

Someone said it. The job is (was) about culture and big labor has destroyed the culture.

And yeah maybe the salary is low, but, lots of salaries are low, and every ski town is expensive.

If you’re trying to make a living just off what you make by the hour then you’re doing life wrong. It’s not hard to at least double your income with that little device in your pocket or a few well placed investments.

That's crazy talk. That would be like some sort of imaginary world where the people with all of the wealth could keep things in their favor as long as the regular folk could be kept divided and fighting amongst themselves over a few toxic and emotionally based topics by way of making sure there were only two political parties they could choose between and identify themselves as. That's ridiculous!

Just another possibly futile attempt at enlightening you to data that opposes your position. Point is the wealthy have bought the government through orchestrated means. Any other view is fantasy. Bicker on!

Cheers TFW 🥃 appreciate your insights here. It’s the best job in the world if you can learn to wake up every morning and be thankful for it. Good to know there are others here with the same appreciation. Maybe someday we can drink whiskey and talk about the glory days. I’ve had a few too so I’m gonna log off for the night.

Hey, I'm not trying to tar and feather you or your lifestyle.
    Sounds like it was awesome.
But can people really do that now? Can people even buy a functional car that could make it up the canyon for less than $4k?

I think the Stevens Pass patrol is being paid $14/hr. Non one can live on that around the Puget Sound, including Leavenworth or Wenatchee.

So, sorry if it came off as a personal attack, didn't mean it that way.

Lots of shit has become unaffordable. I worked through college. Dealt acid up LCC circa 1975 to pay for the life. That's just not possible now.
