Palm Donut had just a few dubious varieties of donuts in super short supply out front, along with a cig machine and a hotdog wheel, but at like 3 am boxes of stuff used to get loaded into the back of the owner's van on the side of the building. Mr. T would run out there to add to load in the middle of night, god knows what these two establishments were comingling at that hour (see: drugs) , so I assume Mr. T stayed open late to make his contributions and hell, may as take a few walk ins.

So, I started going after a heavy night of drinking and get a hot shave. He had esoteric sport events on that were potentially being broadcast live in whatever part of the world was awake, a stack of nudie mags and some of the most comfortable chairs around. It was bliss so I got a taste for a good barber experience early.

As an adult, I spent a good deal of time going to Rudy's in Ballard which was connected to a great bar with skiball. Have a cocktail, throw some skiball, stumble into the shop for a cut and shave. That morphed into trying out those high class places with leather, tv and cocktails, which had their own charm but I missed the grittiness.

Now I'm on island and go to some guy in an old building who rents a room just big enough for a chair and a window that looks out onto a bucolic pasture with cows and chickens. He barely ever answers his phone and has no online presence, only takes cash, so I just set up my next appointment each time I am there.

I've learned I don't care quite as much about the hair and instead like the experience and time to myself.
Sounds like your Korean barber was a true first gen immigrant. Donuts get shipped out early am for wholesale customers when fresh . My guess is he probably has to be there to help with the shipping process so why not cut some hair while hey there and make a few extra bucks.

Cheapest cut in town is 23.50 CAN $ so about 5bucks US$ obviously some of you need to look more high end,

I just need to look like a ski gentleman so an old Dynafit hat covers all sins

I think most of you are old enough to have input on the nose & ear hair

    Outlaws Barber Shop, Sisters OR
Owner is a 6'2" well inked power lifter and line coach for the HS football team
Pool table, kegerator, TV with hunting & fishing
    Buzz cut = $18 plus $5 tip
Get a #6 spacer, buzz it down, come back in two months when I have to comb it again
    Is that expensive?

That's really expensive for a buzz cut. IMO.

I started cutting my hair at the beginning of the pandemic and have gotten pretty decent at it. My wife thinks it is at least as good as the haircuts I was paying for previously. If I ever want to do anything else other than shaved sides blended into a longer top, though, I'll go back to paying a professional.

I usually have a family member cut my hair when she is available. If she isn't available I'll go to a barber for $20. I've always been very lazy with my hair and never had a schedule for when to get my hair cut. I can probably also count on two hands how many times I ever put any kind of product other than shampoo and conditioner in my hair.

Home haircut club here since I’ve been married, every few weeks my wife cuts it with trimmers and a #2 or 3 guard. Both my sons have adopted dads hair style too…we’ll see how long that lasts.

$28 cut, I pay $50 in cash. She only works 2 days a week and books out about 2 weeks.

She is a Mongolian immigrant that does ASMR type stuff way better than the girl in the above link.

It takes 35 minutes but its awesome and I get my ears waxed.

Yeah but, who talks about that shit?

I've spent about $70 years ago for a good Wahl trimmer and take 10 minutes every now and then to buzz what's left. Before that I got a $30 one 25 years ago that retired early so, $100 for haircuts for 25 years. Cheap is good.

I pay $40-$50 depending on which barber I go to...

When I was single I noticed I had much better success with the ladies with a nice haircut. It was easily worth the money then… now it’s just habit.

I pay $30 with a tip for a nice haircut and beard trim. I don't mind supporting a local trade and local business owner, plus he gives me beer or whisky when I get a haircut.

I will add - I miss good barbershops. Bay area had the best ones. Joe's in the Castro was amazing if you were comfortable with the random gay porn scattered about - fantastic hair cuts for 20 bucks in the city. Dude taught me a lot about how to handle balding hair and the options cut-wise.
Then a great place in oakland where this random stoner dude with long hair just gave immaculate cuts and straight razor shaves in less than 20 minutes for 25 bucks or so in what looked like someone's living room decor-wise (was absolutely a commercial place, but they just decorated that way).

No hair cuts since Covid started. A couple of free trims to even it out. I am not getting any chicks with my old hippie look.

Been cutting my own hair since 5th grade. I do my own fades.

I was the barber for all my college friends and even a job I had 10 yrs ago where we travelled to shit hole countries for long periods of time I actually was my CEO’s barber. Pretty funny.

Honestly can’t remember last time someone else cut my hair.

My wife does mine with an Oster Classic 76. If you're not married, using the expensive hipster place for regular haircuts is probably cheaper in the long run...

The donut shop would put their own boxes of “donuts” into the van at 3 am and Mr. T would put his own boxes of “?” into the same van at 3 am. No doubt the man was a hard worker, but something weird was going on. But you are correct, whatever him and the donut shop people had set up, he used the extra time to shave weirdos like me in the middle of the night.

I've had my hair cut once in the last year and a half, by my girlfriend, so I guess I'm saving some coin. Before that I had it cut every 4 to 6 weeks at both low and high end joints, and years ago when I lived out in the boonies I cut it myself.

Wahl # 1 all over. The eyebrow, nose and ear hair have gotten out of hand.
I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

Yep, that was my spot when living in the lower haight. I also appreciated that he would walk me through how to style my hair, products to use, and options for new but similar cuts. Super legit.

I like the walk in place that lets you beat the ever loving shit out of that guy who walked in 15 seconds before you.

I once showed up at a sport clips on a Saturday 5 minutes before they opened. The dude waiting in his truck spilled his Bloody Mary on his doonesbury strip and pissed his pants trying to get out of his truck to go stand by the door to “claim his spot.”

    Can’t blame him.

Got a haircut today. $24. I'm on their schedule every four weeks, its near the university so you can't walk in without a long wait. The owner cuts my hair (a good deal for them since I don't have much hair) He told me a funny story today: A customer named Evan Williams gave him a bottle of Evan Williams eggnog as a christmas gift. Yesterday at the end of the day he grabbed the bottle and since there wasn't much left in it, just drank straight out of the bottle. He was sitting there in his barber chair, not great posture, hair messed up, drinking from the bottle, one of the other barbers said "Man, you look so divorced right now"

Interesting seeing what a haircut costs these days. Gillette Fusion and some shaving cream in the shower for the past 8 years here.

I recently treated myself to a beard trim for $20 and it caused quite a bit of anxiety.
I guess I’m guarding what little I’ve got available.
