    Not always.

Just mounted some faction candide 5.0 and they had little to no base bevel... which would suck hard on a ski that wide. I put a 1.5 degree on them myself.

They SHOULD have a base bevel from the factory but I wouldn't assume that.

True, but now you’re progressing beyond Ski Bum tuning level. Can’t assume bases are flat either. Ski Bum may want to check the base edge bevel and if it needs adjustment then take it to a reputable shop. If Ski Bum wants to progress to Shop Rat tuning level and set base bevel themselves, then maybe take the time to watch the more in depth tuning clinic videos.

    Agreed.

But my point is taking a free tune out of the deal is likely a benefit for the OP because you can't always trust the factory tune.

Whats funny is whenever my skis have acted weird or grabby or something ive just resorted to progressively detuning further and further until the funny handling stopped. I also stopped holding an edge on crust, ice, and compacted hardpack. Probably a non-flat base and or fucked base bevel. But at least without any edges to speak of, the snow cannot unexpectedly "catch" one....

Sorry, didn’t realize we were back on the point of this thread. Yes, often the factory tune is not perfect, and I’d happily take a free shop grind/tune to correct the dimples. If it’s a good shop with good equipment/techs you’ll very likely have a ski that’s in better than factory condition.

That works but is not ideal. You're sacrificing the point of the edges to compensate for a bad tune.

Not judging at all... but the ideal situation is a quality flat tune with appropriate base bevels, and minor detuning.

Mount point can play into this as well.

The Baker Bob edge tuning guide:

    1)Ski to lift line corral
2)Place ski edge on metal crowd gate
3)Move leg forward and back to run edges on metal pipe
    4)Proclaim audibly "That should work!"
    5)Go ski

Repeat steps again if detune is not to desired levels

I have never been in that kind of position before, these guys have mounted skis no problem multiple times for me. At that point I guess I just didnt really know what to say.
I am calling them today to see what can be done and what they can offer me.

In the Rocky Rockies ... the rock finds you

I have taken along a small piece of emery cloth to dull the tails of an especaly evil handling ski do 5 cms and try it out

If the binding screws arent all the same length maybe they got em mixed up ??

^yes I have literally done this (minus the proclaim). I would also recommend Shorty’s rock detuning method.

That's funny given that just about every post in this forum discussing working on your own skis seems to mention the ingestion or inhalation of intoxicating substances as step one.

I’ve mounted a shit ton of skis in the shop and at home. I dimpled a pair mounting some tyrolia bindings….the front heel screws were way too fucking long. Reached out to the company and got told they fucked up a few and had let the shops know, sent me the right screws. Maybe this is what happened?
