Eat like your Grandpa - Tinned fish and potted meat appreciation…

I know, truly. But you have to understand the context here and why I’m pretty resolute in doing this.

Every Xmas, my wife, her sister and her mother end up arguing in polish about what I can only assume is the stupidest shit three adults could argue about when everyone is suppose to be having a good time. All the while, they are shoveling jellied and lye-laden fish dishes in their maws while I wait until midnight on the dot to start eating real meat (It’s a Polish thing.) I’ll peck at some of these dishes prior to midnight but the banter usually involves some slight towards me about how my innards aren’t steeled enough. It’s all in pretty good fun, but it’s enough of a window for me to be petty about it. So this year I’m going to grab the upper hand early and introduce this dish at the onset of the first lobbed polish affront or any mention of my eating proclivities. Sophomoric, yes, but I can’t not.

To make matters more interesting, my brother in law is a madman who thrives on extremes. He swims off Alki throughout the winter, runs 15 miles a day, can toss just about anything in his gullet and he will be about 15 shots of vodka deep by 8pm. I’m sure he knows the origins of the dish, and if he doesn’t, I’ll apprise him and I expect he will be more than willing to give this a go.

That's a pretty good reason for sure and yes I know you are a smart guy but you also thought fractional ownership was a great idea too.

Do I have to eat surstromming to get my free voucher for a jet ski rental?
I’ll sit through the hard sale pitch. But not sure about the fish.

    I’ll take the lutefisk instead

Today I learned that there is a digital sardine (and anchovy) can museum in Portugal. Never say technology doesn't make out lives better.

Ok - so I followed your reco. These are ok but not what I’m looking for… They are pretty mild, not
fishy, not salty. These anchovies would actually be a good gateway can for someone who hasn’t ventured down this path yet…

I had a white anchovy on a salad that was somewhere between a normal brined anchovy and the ones above… it was spectacular. The search continues.

These appeared in the mail around Christmas. No explanation. I don't even really like fish. Wtf.
I think my brothers (Charlie don't surf) idea.

They are tasty tho I can't deny.

Xmas dinner slated for next weekend finally. Another covid scare in the fam pushed us back yet again. My conviction hasn’t waned a bit so all systems go.

Yes. Make a quick salad with EVOO, lemon, some julienne jicama, black pepper, and a touch of vinegar. Herbs to taste.

    Fantastic.

    Yes!!

I hope you did it outside. I can’t imagine the stench in a house.

Can’t blame you for tapping out.
