This is kinda a good idea… anyone else getting the feeling that resorts will start cashing in on the uphill traffic (beyond $5 convenience fees)? Not sure how legal it is on public land but the demand for a “safe” uphill experience is definitely there.
I think a lot of people would pay for an avy controlled randonee resort with warming huts, lodging, rentals, etc.

Norseman, I love the photos. Such great winter vibes. Nerd question: do you tour with your camera accessible on the outside of your pack or take your pack off for each shot?
I'm coming out and saying this is a good idea - just the idea of semi-developed areas for skiing without chairlifts.
This is based on the assumption that you are not opposed to further development for recreation of any kind. Otherwise, please move on. It also assumes that you are not trying to protect your bc stash from increased use - all are entitled to their perspective.
Hear me out, purists: If lift served skiing is OK, lift served backcountry is OK, and pure backcountry without lifts is OK, it seems to me that minimal improvement specifically for uphill skiing could also be OK and be worthwhile for a range of people. Skinning is reasonably accessible for moderately fit people, and it's a great way to ski if you want the fitness aspect, don't want to wait in lift lines, and just like the less crowded experience. If you can already ski downhill, being able to hike for turns is not a massive extension. However let us be honest: assessing avalanche terrain can be complex and take years of education and experience. You have a lot of people that are just too scared to set foot in the bc, or are going where they should not go in ignorant bliss. I think that's often because it's the only way to ski outside of lift-served skiing. Also, it can be a lot of work and logistics to safely travel in the bc. I love it, but even so, I like skinning for turns on super mellow terrain just for fitness/enjoyment sometimes and a close ski area is often ideal for that.
I think hiking-only "ski areas" with minimal improvements, marked closed/open runs, perhaps some avalanche control, ski patrol, etc is definitely something people would pay for, and might be the only reasonable way to expand access to skiing in a lot of places - assuming that minimal improvements are easier to make and get access for than building full lift served areas. I'm thinking of a level of development closer to a mtb trail head than a traditional ski area.

Exactly! If I had a family, I would want to share the ski touring experience with them (and avoid crowded mega resorts). However I wouldn't want to be solely responsible for managing risk. This seems like the natural evolution of north american ski culture if we can't get buy-in for new lift served ski resorts.

Save our Chairlifts!!!
Am I the only one that likes riding lifts anymore? I just like to go fast.
Touring is okay.
Guess I’m lazy.

Thanks. Yeah, I took a "long lunch" and checked out West for the first time. Not bad for a first day. I am praying to finding better variety at Central and East. OR, that my wife gets used to the idea that Mt Bachelor mellow-wide-open groomers are a thing of the past, and to embrace Alpental...

Open groomers??? Haha.
Silver fur and Hyak have better terrain for your wife. That’s where I take mine.

Aside from Mission Ridge, WA grooming in general doesn't even come close to Bachelor. Sorry to break it to ya.
