How is the skiing at Mt. Hood Meadows without the gate accessed terrain? My son and I have Indy passes this year and are contemplating a mid-March trip out there. He can handle pretty much anything in-bounds in New England, but I'm not really comfortable bringing him into areas requiring beacon usage.

While I’m not going to tell you it’s OK, people have been accessing the gated terrain without beeping forever and still do. For some reason, it hasn’t become part of the culture yet. I’ve switched to carrying gear after too many recent tragedies. When gates are open & viz is decent, there are plenty of folks in those areas. You can follow the ants, as it were; just go easy on seeking fresh lines cuz some stuff doesn’t go if you haven’t previewed it.

Terrain mostly isn’t any crazier that you will find at home, just maybe some longer runs & longer vistas. I think MHM gets a bad rap for terrain, but I’m not going to pretend it’s the most gnar out west.

Your son will find plenty to keep him entertained.

March is a great time of year here…plenty of snow and daylight is getting better. Just know OR public schools are out the last week of March so it can be busy. And ski teams are mostly done by then.

    Wise advice.

And if you're skiing up here, it's best to aim for weekdays. The weekends can be a zoo with the lots filling up well before the lifts spin.

Thanks guys. It would be mid-week, second week of March. Sounds like it could be a good option.

Headed home from a two week fire assignment in Entiat, WA today.
Grass fire is burning on the other side (Oregon) of the Columbia from us East of Biggs Junction. Looks like it should burn up into the rocks.

Willamette Pass Annouces Joint Partnership with Mountain Capital Partners

"Mountain Capital Partners (MCP) and Willamette Pass Resort announced
they have agreed to enter into a joint venture for the operation of Willamette Pass Resort in
Oregon. This collaboration marks the 10th resort for MCP, the Southwest’s largest ski resort
management company, and the collective’s first Pacific Northwest ski area."

    Today's announcement

Curious about how this will affect operations. Tim's been successful alienating customers and employees alike, so it may be for the better?

I've never skied at any of the other MCP resorts.
    From the news release:
"Headquartered in Durango, Colo., Mountain Capital Partners (MCP) owns and manages the
largest collective of ski resorts in the Southwest. The portfolio includes Purgatory Resort (Colo.),
Arizona Snowbowl Ski Resort (Ariz.), Brian Head Resort (Utah), Sipapu Ski & Summer Resort
(New Mex.), Nordic Valley Ski Resort (Utah), Pajarito Mountain Ski Area (New Mex.), Hesperus
Ski Area (Colo.), and Colorado’s largest snowcat skiing operation, Purgatory Snowcat
    Adventures."

Cedar Creek fire got pretty close. There’s enough Values in Place (reputation doesn’t matter) there for wildland firefighters to focus on saving.

@verde - Nobody goes to Hoodoo anymore - too crowded

Yes, they had crews stationed in the lot a few weeks ago just in case

The weekends are no joke too. Never seen so many collisions and near misses.

I will say the first 90 minutes can be good - before the GORGs are booted up.

He had pants on - just down around his ankles

Have Ben tell you about his guy who jumped on Manzi before opening - then got pissed when they stopped the chair and let him sit there for 1/2 hr. He was invited to leave at that point
