Ok so is Isle de Harry due nort?
Hope ya got the boat out on the trailer with these temps. We left MT to freezing rain and having to shovel sand up in front of the stuck plow truck halfway up the grade to Georgetown.

I generally have a very negative view of the whole Midwest. But this thread makes the place look really nice. Private island on a nice lake and it appears to be very beautiful. Being Wisconsin I assume they give you a ticket if you’re not drinking and boating. Island really needs a sauna. Good work and enjoy your slice of paradise.

The modern "kit cabin" movement is really blowing up. Sled everything over on the ice this winter and build in the spring.

I hear you. I grew up in the Midwest and GTFO’d one week after HS graduation and vowed I would never come back.
It really is beautiful here, and I am enjoying living here.
I lived my entire adult life in Montana, and loved living there too. Life is what you make of it, I’m choosing to be happy. YMMV.
Thanks !

I kow a couple of people who have buildings by Jamaica Cottage, from Vermont. They're less design-oriented than the ones in WRG's link but they are solid and economical and they have a ton of options. https://jamaicacottageshop.com
Something to look at for ideas at least.

Permanent Wood Foundations actually work pretty well if you're remote and concrete ain't a thing and you can do them right.

I’m following this thread pretty closely as someone that recently bought remote land and has a desire to build on it. I don’t have to go across water but I’m an hour and a half from any largish towns, the last 22 miles include bone rattling dirt roads.
I’m digging that link from Ice, those cabins look pretty reasonably priced. I clicked on a few choices on the WRG link and holy fucking expensive!

I don't think he needs a foundation, I'd consider going with augered footings like these random ones google just found: https://store.decksgo.com/products/d...hoCGL4QAvD_BwE
Not vouching for that exact product, I know nothing about the company

Hmmm, never really gave it a thought other than a long time ago Ice and I chatted about a similar “charity” on the East coast.
I’ll keep it in mind.

Harry’s Island
Cool island, Harry! Ice roads notwithstanding, I’d still be on the lookout for an old pontoon boat you can strip down and convert into a barge. My dad has done lots of building on/around a lake a few hours northeast of you. Ice season is money for lots of heavy lifting and stuff that isn’t very practical when the lake is wet, but that’s a pretty narrow window and big stable floating platforms were key. And then when you’re done you can drop a hot tub on it and turn it into a party barge.
This part of the Midwest isn’t terrible at all, at least in terms of outdoor (non-gravity) recreational opportunities and general scenic beauty.
Nah, I thoroughly enjoyed them too. I think I was a few years older than you too. I don’t have to believe in everything I read/watch to enjoy it.Last edited by Mustonen; 11-26-2021 at 11:22 AM.

I love a wood fired sauna, but floating in one sounds like a gnarly case of motion sickness.
Am I missing something? Now I'm kinda hoping that ice fishing country houses a whole world of low-roofed saunas with little lids where people stick their heads out the top and bob around in the sun.
