    Mammoth 2021-2022 snow mandate thread.

Hey everyone, it’s good to be back and making my first October turns at Mammoth since 2004! It’s been a killer morning and the skiing has exceeded my expectations. Crowds are way less than I expected and we have barely had to wait for the Gondi at mid chalet, sometimes walking right on. Possibly that may be due to the skis area formerly known as SV opening today as well with 8 chairs spinning. Left Reno just after 5:00 am and we were in the ch 2 lot just at it opened.

Ch 2 is open for access up only. No way to ski down.

Got to the top of Ch 2 and I took a quick pic of the top and hauled ass to mid chalet.

Did laps on both sides of Dave’s. Snow was a mix of everything but overall pretty fun.

Next run we skied the skiers left of Daves and then worked our way under Juevos. Snow was a mix of pow, wind buff and some slab. Fun.

Next run off the Gondi we tucked it up to the top of ch 23. Wipe out 2 was super buff. Best run so far.

Some kook with big hair came flying past me in lower wipe out. I’m so much better than him.

Took a long lunch break and am heading back out. The shuttle line is huge, everyone’s leaving. Should be a good afternoon.

    Bitchin'!

I'm totally kicking myself for not booking the flight for this weekend. All that looks way better than the stupid conference calls I've been stuck on all day.

Crazy how much that resembles the coverage in April last year.

Best opening since 2004. Too bad I had to go to work. My pitiful 90 minute session will have to do until tomorrow.

It was the greatest opening day in the history of Mammoth Mtn! I have no idea whether that's true or not but it was super fun and one of the best openings I can remember in years (2004 maybe). My boy and I skied almost bell to bell with some breaks thrown in as early season legs barely made it til 4:00. Our timing was good and we caught the last gondola car to the top at 3:35 p.m. According to ski Tracks we skied 21 runs and just under 40K vertical feet for the day.

If you thought the morning was good, the afternoon got better.

Wipeout's 1 & 2 were firing all afternoon. That's my kid, age 17 and a senior in HS. He just got accepted to Montana State on an early admission for the fall of 2022 so him ditching school to go skiing today was fine by me.

This would have been a cool shot of my kid arcing a turn past me if Dad's shadow wasn't there. Lower Wipeouts were good as well. Word of advice, San Anton's sucked. From where my kid is make about three more turns and then go hard skiers right and cut back to return to mid chalet.

Here's a clip of my kid that shows how good Wipeout was. Word of caution is yes it's good, but know your line. it's still bony and not time to charge. I told my kid to keep it at 75%, and I'm doing it as well.

By 1:00 pm Friday this was the scene at McCoy. No lines and walked right onto the gondola. The one guy that's in standing in front of us is doing the same thing I was, he stopped to take a pic because he couldn't believe no one was in line.

Another clip from Wipeouts Friday. Amazing.

I'll be back out tomorrow and we'll see what the weekend brings. Get fired up and ski smart.

Early morning report after 5 runs. Yesterdays silky wind buff is gone. Snow set up big time overnight. Off piste is punchy and crusty, groomed is firm so far.

Groomed cornice is the best run off the top right now, just don’t turn your back to the hill or risk getting taken out. My advice is if your here but not on the hill is to take your time and come up around 12:30-1:00 pm. and hope the snow transitions. No need to rush up right now.

^^ Reminds me of last March when you and I were riding up the gondy and saw that crew of snowboarders sitting at the bottom of cornice, completely unaware of two snowboarders who fell at the top and went for a slide for life right into them. Half hilarious, half cringe.

    Mammoth 2021-2022 snow mandate thread.

^which reminds me of my of my first ever run on cornice at about 12 and watching my buddy somehow slide backwards off a steep chicken track (pre grooming era) and take the whole run down in an extended egg beater fall (pre brake era). My Laughing was mixed concern that he was gonna take a ski edge to the dome (pre helmet era) He finally came to a stop and was ok and my laughing recommenced.

ESS, as always great pics. Congrats on your sons acceptance. You did good and letting him ditch school was good of you too. I have never skied before November 20th, so hopefully I can move it up this season. Hope to see all the Mammoth crew this winter.

Great pics. Coverage in wipeout/dropout looks as good as it was last April/May. Can't wait to get east.

Great shots, ESS! It looks really nice right now.

Next weekend Fofette has her wilderness first aid recert in Bishop. I suggested I could drop her off, go ski for the weekend and pick her up on Monday. She wasn't amused by my suggestion! During the season, we both go skiing on our own if the other one is busy, but she wants us to open the skiing season together. So I'll have to wait a couple of weeks.
