Looking down towards the 395 from Old Mammoth road corner. Traffic backed up for miles and going nowhere. Word is that CHP isn’t running escorts either due to whiteouts. Tonight looks like another round of 12-24 inches. They have a couple of lifts open and roads in town are plowed. We are still buried at the RV park.

I saw that posted on the CalTrans Twitter. Sounds like it’s mostly wind that’s hammering the highway with drifting, and it’s keeping things closed. Fun.

Seems 50/50 on if we make it tomorrow. If the wind abates, I like our chances. Otherwise, sounds like a Bishop parking lot party.

A similar storm that shut the area down for a couple days and blew the snow enough to cover the fumarole o chair 3 killed 3 patrollers in 200, as most know, but it's worth remembering them and cruising past the monument when they get the hill opened up again--

Looking at the cams just now it is DUMPING. Anything more than a few lower lifts opening today seems like a stretch. Report said the snow is DEEP, so be careful out there guys and girls.

Rolled into town last night after a week in Santa Cruz visiting fam for Christmas. We made the right call to go through Tehachapi and caught the 395 opening shortly after running some errands in Bishop. Thankfully had friends show up at the house last Thursday who have been able to (just) stay on top of snow management. I spent the morning clearing what fell overnight, widening the driveway, and fully clearing the deck and stairs. It's still dumping.

Amazing day with the limited terrain open. Knee to waist deep in blower pow. Talking with patrol today Paranoids and Avy 1 slid to the ground in this cycle. The crown at paranoids was ~ 9 ft and slid to chair 11. Lots of surface cracks in some of the roped off terrain. The snow pack is sketchy and hopefully can heal up and allow patrol to open up more terrain this week.

If you were one of the 25 or so people who were at June Mountain today, it was certainly a day to remember.

No doubt. Those days at June when the highway is closed are magic. I hit one once and just lapped J2 and just moved further out from the chair on each run to get fresh lines. Thank dog J2 is so slow or I would have died of powder exhaustion.

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...

Only been to June three times for maybe a total of 8 hours and absolutely love the place. Would be ecstatic to be able to ski J1 (and the traverse from J2) with a small crowd and good snow. We mostly skied off J7 when we have been there due to it having the best snow, but that entire hill is pretty sweet. We have a Mammoth trip planned in February and are trying to cajole some friends to come along, and they would absolutely love that place. So chill compared to its neighbor.

Quick summary of today. Stand in line at chair 8, starting around 8:30. Lift’s spinning but nobody loading. Finally around 9 am, 4 patrollers come down into Canyon. Hats off to that entire team for their work this week. They must have given an all clear and we start loading. One run down Hully Gully is some funky ass snow. Returned to Canyon and one look at the line and told the family we are going to June. Didn’t go there first thing because the Caltrans app was showing 395N closed at the 203. Spent the rest of the day in zero lift lines having a blast on same amount of vertical Mammoth was able to open.

A sold out town with only a handful of lifts equals long lines. A couple times I checked the app and saw 20+ minute waits on 8, 15, 17 and 22. It looked like you were spared lift line hell if you gambled and went up to Main.

Back next week. For those up there, enjoy the good coverage and next storms.

UUUUGH...fuck that. 20 minute waits on 8? I would go ice skating or walk the dogs. Luckily things are back to normal again.

I must say, Mammoth is a special place. After four successful days; I can’t wait to get back.

We caught a brief opening in 395 on the 27th, parked the camper in the dirt bag lot, and skied. Great time.

I had a lovely introduction to Eastern Sierra wind board after I tolled tomahawked and beatered in no less that three times the first day. Lapped low angle pow while the Marley of the mountain was closed and people stayed inside.

The next day, storm skiing was all-time. Hutash was kind enough to feed me beta throughout the trip and like UPS; it deliver. Skied mostly out of Main due to the insane amount of crowds at Canyon.

Skiing wind buff refills off Face Lift was a highlight, as was catching the rope drop into Christmas Bowl late in the afternoon.

I’m sorry I wasn’t able lock up with any Mags. Skiing with me brother, wife, and all three of us in the camper with the dog, kept me pretty busy.

I’ll be back, that’s for sure!

Glad you had a great time Bobcat. I love Mammoth and I am really looking forward to getting up on the 9th for 5 days of skiing with the guys at the ski club.

Unlike many resorts in CA and the Rockies, MM seems to have dogged the bullet regarding staff shortages and their impact on mountain ops ..... or am I mis-reading the situation?
Is there something unique about Mammoth (location? Elevation? Staff salary levels?) that keeps things apparently turning over smoothly?

Well the only mammoth employees I know live in their cars and I know multiple people who turned down mammoth job offers because they couldn't get housing, but yes I would agree it isn't impacting their ops a whole bunch from what I have seen. As far as I know staffing and housing are still a real issue there, maybe even more than other places on the housing front.
