Tuning question, recommendations for a base grind in Vancouver? Vancover ski and board used to be my go to but they closed last year.

Crystal Glide in North Vancouver. That's where I go now that van ski is closed. You can drop off your skis at Comor sports in kits if you don't want to cross any bridges.
As far as Vancouver proper goes... I really don't know.::.:..::::.::.:.::..::.

Well, how was it off Peak? I lined up at 10am for 10 mins, then bailed to do some skiing! It looked a little wind affected but I'm sure some tree shots were good.

didn't have enough time to wait out alpine opening today, but still decent mid mountain conditions this morning.

Hearing reports of a avy in Blackcomb Glacier, as well as one on west ridge. This true?

Ya.
Cornice failure i believe on West Ridge which had a tragic ending. Bootpacker on blackcomb glacier above the windlip. Never seen that go before, and they had results above it to the lookers right. Im guessing the glacier has receded so far and fast that what was once benign is now avalanche terrain. 70cm crown line. Spooky out there. Whistler 21/22
Vail has really fucked up this time.
I didn’t think it could be any worse but they’ve managed.
Inbounds avys on both mountains—shit happens. Patrol can’t control everything. Caveat emptor.
Sad to here of the local death on Whistler. Vibes to friends & family
That being said corporate bean counters have asked the best local avalanche educator to take down a post about the inbounds avalanche on Blackcomb-the same day someone died on Whistler from an inbounds avalanche.
Rather than trying to use these incidents as an educational opportunity, help illustrate how dangerous the mountains are-inbounds-Vail has decided they want less information-not more.
Fuck Vail.
I’m disgusted

Wango is still an employee. Fwiw even when WB was still WB, inbounds avalanche discussions and pictures were still off-limits particularly for staff.
Having said that this is most definitely a Vail Fail

It’s common for companies not wanting employees blasting incidents across social media. Not a Vail Fail

Recent avalanche details summary
I dig a ton of digging across various social media posts and was able to compile info about various recent inbound slides.
Wednesday 4/6 Blackcomb Glacier slide, triggered by bootpacker climbing up to DOA above wind lip, around 12:45pm, size 2, no injuries
Tuesday 4/5 base of West Ridge slide, cornice failure, size 1, around 3pm, one fatality (by "high speed impact"), reports of at least 2 others swept (1 at least 30m, the other at least 60m)
Tuesday 4/5 slide near the ski out of West bowl, commenter Pierre Banks wrote that he observed the West Ridge slide around 3pm just 5 minutes before himself triggering a slide in dense trees. Narrowly avoided being swept. Soft slab/storm slab, 35 degree slope.
Sometime this week, 2 patrollers caught in an unexpected slide on Harmony, 1 partial burial with airbag pulled, 1 full burial. They kept working after.
Tuesday 3/15 Sapphire bowl slide, skier triggered on traverse from Blackcomb Glacier into Sapphire, size 2 slab, 20m crown, 1 full burial near surface (Ryan Crisp who reported the story), 1 partial burial who swam out and self-extricated, 1 partial burial up to her neck but head clear, 2 additional caught. Part of his group had AST2 training and avy gear and were able to rescue Ryan. More details here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/SCGB...0305461834664/
Tuesday 3/15 Surf's Up slide, size 1.5, slid at 11am several hours before the Sapphire bowl slide, carried 2 but no burialLast edited by hbfs; 04-08-2022 at 12:51 PM.

Does it irritate anyone else when people call Blackcomb Glacier, Glacier Bowl? Or just me? That zone needs a new name.

Good list. Glacier slide is nowhere near DOA. That guy is fucking lost if is looking for DOA around there.
The Sapphire one was definitely not "on the traverse into sapphire". edit: (I guess its on the traverse from Glacier to Sapphire, I read that as the spankys traverse into sapphire) It was under New Years, somewhere that requires a side step up to and is definitely double black diamond terrain, that sees sparse traffic. People pushing into this kind of terrain normally have the skills to dissect these kind of things (that group appeared to know what they were doing FYI). I was in Bushrat on Monday afternoon and backed off the shoulder line as it was slabby and even with my beacon i wanted nothing to do with it as i didnt fancy going for a ride.
Pierre's issue is exactly why I beep in bounds on big days. Was riding with a squad of 4 on Monday, all beeping. CBC and some of those gullys and even some of the smaller spaces in Spankys are prone to sliding.
I just don't know what else patrol can do other than blast every aspect, which would suck. I do agree that they can hopefully use this as a learning experience for guests and locals.
I'm also very glad that the glacier slide wasn't on a Saturday as it could well have been one of the worst inbounds incidents ever...
