Heavily treed for sure, but unsure on the value of the timber.
(I've worked on enough timber cases as an economist to know that I don't know how to value timber, as foresters pointed out to me the many defects on trees that looked nice & purty to me.)

Pitch is not steep enough to slide for avy danger but definitely steep enough for dragging trees downhill.
But far too visible from town to clearcut illegally.
Although pretty much everything in New England was clearcut at some point, especially before there were laws about that...

I didn't pull it out. Definitely not a piton, I am thinking it was some kind of drill bit? it was about 2" wide maybe 18" long? guessing on that because it was in the ground.

It’s an upside-down beat-to-shit star drive bit. Was there a dead guy nearby with a hammer in his hand?

Anyone have any insight into where on the internet I could figure this out? I've looked at a couple hundred Google Images but haven't seen anything close to similar.

I’m thinking maybe a cap pistol from the 1950’s or possibly earlier.

Children's cap gun. The huge single ring sight and light gauge spring say "kid's toy" to me personally.

I'm reasonably sure that's a rock splitter. If you look around there will probably be some nearby evidence of old-school quarrying where they'd drill holes in a line and pound these in until the rock splits to break down ledge into marketable material. They also just smashed them into natural splits in the rock and broke it down that way too so this guy may have bitten off more than he could chew and just left that one behind.

Yeah. Probably missing some parts, too, which explains why it is hard to see how it functions. It broke, and the kid tossed it away.

Kids cap gun. The ring isn’t a sight, looks like it’s there to hold a missing part.

Similar, but different one from the 50’s:

i did notice a few perfectly drilled holes in the rock pretty deep, i think you’re on to something. they must have been quarrying from this cliff before anyone cared about it.

It was 1k up a ridge with no trail on it. I figured Dad had a real gun looking for deer and kiddo had his cap gun which he forgot. Sooner or later I'll find a photo of the original.

Alright. In case anyone actually cares about my cap gun here is what I've found. Turns out it probably shot cork bits and was likely from the 20s.

I've spit rock with feathers and wedges--they don't look anything like that and two inch diam. is awfully thick to be spitting rock with.

Ah, yeah, good find. Might even be collectible if it’s that old. I’d be careful about “restoring” it. Sometimes collectors prefer the rust.

And for today's installment ... chairlift tower pads -- I think? -- found in an illicitly cut in-bounds glade (which I just happened to end up hiking through, not doing work or scouting), fairly far from the closest ski trail, which in turn is fairly from from the nearest lift.
