Back on topic.. Rite of passage impacted last night.. My teen kid finished their big theater production last evening finishing the last of 3 shows. Asked if they could go out with the rest of the cast and crew last night to Waffle House after they finished packing it all up and putting it away.. Of course I responded with an enthusiastic YES with this being the first time they ever asked to do anything with friends that late... knowing they'd be out til at least midnight doing that... as a senior in high school..
Anyway, this morning I asked if they had fun and got a flat response of not really.. First Awful House they went to said.. "no indoor dining" and sent them to another location.. Upon arrival at Awful House 2 same response.. So they went to IHOP next.. Same response there. All of these places definitely have indoor dining. I mused that "they saw the size of your group and realized they had no way of handling 30 people at the same time being short staffed due to COVID and people wanting more money to work places like that now".. Ended up having a parade through the drive thru at CookOut and hanging out in the parking lot. Oh well..Go that way really REALLY fast. If something gets in your way, TURN!

Wait. You actually thought that showing up at any restaraunt with thirty people in tow at any time, even pre pandemic, would not be a problem?
You see, this is why so many in the restaraunt industry quit and aren't coming back. "Hey, whatdoyoumean!? I see people eating inside! You suck!"

I've worked at several restaurants. NEVER turned a group away... See that charter bus pulling up and just sucked it up and made sure they knew it might take two hours to get their food. But ya I had a hunch they'd have issues. It's part of growing up... learning via experience.. And it saved me a big fat "I told you so". In the end, they tried then change the plan when it didn't work out. All worth it in the end..
Obviously you don't have kids and don't care that it's best they figure out shit like this on their own..Go that way really REALLY fast. If something gets in your way, TURN!

The word “ski” when combined with the word “maitre d” is a large reason ski areas are not as much fun as they used to be.

I like the “I was once in the kitchen of a franchise business and it was dirty/clean so all others on the planet must be the same” way of thinking.

I can't imagine why somebody working a shit night job at Waffle House would turn away a bus load of hyper kids who probably won't tip shit - just so the restaurant owner can profit.
When I worked at a restaurant, some people would call a day ahead and ask if they can show up with bus loads of kids. That way we could be ready. Other's didn't call ahead and they were all clueless assholes.

^^^^Truth here. ^^^^^^
Three tries and three fails. I do think in normal times they get served. Life's lessons. One of them is when you're desperate enough to work for less than $3/hr before tips you're usually not in a position to send a lot of customers away without risking losing that job you took for next to nothing.. I'm glad we're at the point where some can and do.
Now explaining to a 17 year old know it all that this is likely how that plan plays out would have been a total waste of oxygen and 5 minutes of pointless frustration.
They found out for themselves and eventually found a way to get something to eat while celebrating their accomplishment together.. In the end everybody got some of what they wanted. I knew they'd be late and didn't pester them asking where they were and what was taking so long because I already had a hunch it would take a lot longer than they thought.. I doubt other parents were as flexible there..Go that way really REALLY fast. If something gets in your way, TURN!

Ha. I learned to hate the town of Telluride when I was last there (as opposed to the mountain, which is great) when I encountered attitude at mediocre restaraunts, the most absurd was a dude at the Chinese place acting like something between the greeter at Bernardin and a bouncer at Studio 54. Whatever happened to comfort food before tomorrow's powder

Nothing like being the kitchen help/bus boy, and hearing a large group of 20 plus just entered the restaurant. It was these cheap ass large groups who tipped at best 5%, that eventually lead to the large group mandatory service tip.
I don't blame the million or so former restaurant workers leaving the industry or sitting out for looking for something better."We don't beat the reaper by living longer, we beat the reaper by living well and living fully." - Randy Pausch

Ya, old folks home bus or kids' field trip bus when they're coming back from the end of school year amusement park trip broke both suck. Both my kids already have a year plus of retail and food service industry experience. But before that the thought of leaving a decent tip wasn't top of mind for sure..

No I much prefer criticism from random strangers who have no actual idea what it's like to have teen kids.. A medal is way above and beyond a living wage for this gig.
Back on topic. I know a bunch of them went to get coffee for themselves and the other kids after school before the practice every day the past month. Imagine the horror when all those orders hit Starbucks and they showed up to pick them up.. every damned day LOL!Go that way really REALLY fast. If something gets in your way, TURN!

Well, yeah, nobody tips in Europe. Ten percent is a generous surprise, usually from an American.

Bullshit excuse. I can go to their country and assimilate, and not be an asshole typical American. They can come over here and tip our waitstaff. It is not like it is a big secret that tipping is a thing here. MOST europeans, this was not a thing. Germans were pretty bad, especially older tour groups.

Maybe they simply don't know. It's still awkward for me to walk away from good service in Italy and not or barely tip, but, that's the deal.
