Sounds like the employer more than the field is the issue.

    Pretty much this spot on

As a "business owner" and employer all I think about is working for someone else and telling them I'm good and quitting. Itd be awesome to do.

Technically you do work for someone ff...your clients. Get the Tyvek up once the down payment clears, leave the windows out and then go tell them to fuck off because you're going to Hollywood.

His job largely (95%) is writing motions and 5% going to Court. Why the shit does he need to go back to the office 8-5 (or longer) every M-F...or the hassle that goes along with it??? How many companies want everyone "back at the office" while their employees think: no thanks, I have wifi.
My buddy is a sysadmin for a multi-state company. He has no reason to be in the office 5 days a week since most of the time he doesn't need to be touching anything and most of that time, it's probably stuff that's not even at his location. During lockdown he worked from home a bit, but he has to work at the office. No reason other than "tradition" or control or they payed for the damn space so they're gonna use it, IDK. He works with a bunch of asshole truckers and mechanics so he just keeps to himself in his office and tries not to interact with people who don't wash their hands after using the bathroom. He says they pay him enough to deal with dumb shit. YMMV, I guess?

COVID sped up the inevitable AI and automation/robotics replacing humans. How many of you still prefer the human checkout like to the one with 12 self serve checkout kiosks.. or better yet.. scan and go? All of this was coming anyway.. the consolidation of duties, people less apps and kiosks, all was already about to happen anyway. Fear of other peoples' breath just brought it to us a couple years quicker.

Same. Self checkout sucks because there's always some quirk or whatever, and it's actually way slower if you have more than a few items.

@JayPowHound - with a masters in behavior analysis and some stats bones, you have a strong play into talent/HR analysis and related programs in larger companies. Involves a lot of survey and data analysis, with some modeling if you're lucky. Your people management skills you picked up in teaching transfer well to most business contexts.
I'd see what the gap is in terms of analysis jobs, but look for something like talent or people analytics. Market research could also work if you're decent at visual things and survey writing.

In terms of back in the office - again why? I know that my company pushed most of the lawyers out of their offices years ago as they were either at trial or doing independent work where they liked doing it, so why did they need offices downtown that they never went to? The disconnect is often at the exec level, as they LOVE being in the office given that most execs I know love working more than almost anything.
As far as wealth transfer - yeah, the technically savvy folks in businesses that could work digital-only cleaned up, but the next 5 years are going to be rough on those that haven't really transitioned practices effectively. In the technology space the cost basis for modern stacks vs. old-style+datacenter maintenance is bonkers. Couple that with data sourcing coming online for any number of things and there will be some players that take the market to the cleaners and the companies stuck with the bad business just sucked dry.

I want both. 1 or 2 items, self checkout all day. More and I'll take a person.

And as for the employer not the field being the problem, afaik from talking to friends / colleagues in different districts it's pretty pervasive... although that is certainly a relevant factor with my current frustrations.

Have you tried using a scan app or fast food apps instead of the drive thru line? That also counts as self checkout..

People who can't handle self checkout should not be allowed to drive.

I prefer self-checkout unless I have a big cart full of crap. And TBH, I almost never have that any more... so self-checkout is almost always more convenient for me.

Esp the self-checkout at Costco. That's the big winner in my book.

Weird, since when does crash greater than 2009=record high close? Haven't even started printing money or handing out "recovery packages" aka free government funded bonuses yet..

Can't quit b/c family and finances. Also big roadblocks for solo (let alone family) trip for BBI.

Mental Health wise you are 100% correct. This is absolutely what I need.

I'll see what I can do.

As an aside.. is Bobby involved in this event? Has anyone even talked to him since the Kraken scared him off??

Self checkout would be way better if the US used the Italian supermarket method for produce. i.e. have multiple computers + scales in the produce section so you weigh and get a barcode sticker there which you can just scan at the checkout instead of having to clog up that line punching a 5 deep touchscreen menu looking for serrano peppers or chantrelles or whatever.
Same with bulk foods. Two things I buy a lot of and the main reason I hate self checkout.

    @Asspen -
Data - more equipment have sensors that can be evented/sucked out for intelligence. Think stuff like soil temp/moisture etc. If you can leverage stuff effectively, you'll be able to build an edge over competition in many domains.
Cost basis - modern serverless cloud stuff costs only compute/storage on top of labor, so rather than paying 5-10k for server+hosting+Colo, it's like 35-100 bucks a month (scaled with volume) or less to run pretty significant workloads. In one case one of our guys built a fully featured website for a charity that's just in storage and costs 12 bucks a year to host. If you're running and staffing your own data center you're likely paying for unused capacity during most times and scaling requires capital investment and time vs a line of code. Modern cloud stuff is fucking magic if you do infra as code.

So this put together you can get better Insights and efficiencies through sensors and analysis while paying much less for the processing and general overhead.
