The front side of Kirkwood has been amazingly wind-free. We've been going every other day and even when their own weather forecast said to expect wind to 85 mph it was barely blowing at the top of 6. Yesterday was a little breezy at the top of 10 but nothing notable and 6 was mellow again.

Meanwhile, since closing the California side on 4/10 Heavenly has been open only 2 (!) days. The last open day was Sunday 4/17 and before that the only other day was 4/12.
"Holy Cow!" someone exclaimed from the back of the stationwagon.

Have to say Kirkwood today might have been the most unsatisfying powder day of the season for me, granted I was on the struggle bus this morning and didn’t actually load till 10:00 am. Snow was fun but found it hard to link more than 4 untracked turns, I’d probably never buy a pass again if it wasn’t for the great backcountry access out of both Heavenly and Kirkwood. 10 never opened so that could be fun for some tomorrow. I guess the last two full days of skiing completely untracked fast fun pow left me jaded today.

In other news after some brief sun it’s dumping again

I too was on the struggle bus. Got to p-house about 1 in a foul mood which was exacerbated by the giver of life and destroyer of snow showing up as soon as I hit the skin track (fuck you sun!). But things mellowed as I gained altitude and it started to snow again. By the time I clicked my boots into ski mood everything was ooootaaay. One of the best powder runs of the year for me.

22 Blue - Looking ahead to the New (aka Fuck Summer (aka Tahoe Thread))

Surprised that SB has closed its parking lots and uphill travel. It’s such a good trailhead. And it’s been super mellow about this in previous years.

Sorry to hear that TBC. Yesterday morning ch 10 laps on kwood were outstanding, boot top pow and nobody there. Then an afternoon mtb ride on brown pow at 52 F. Then some trail breaking and untracked goodness this morning. Click image for larger version.

Maybe cos we haven't skied a storm day in a long time, we had a bloody good time at KW today. And we didn't get on lift until about 11:30. Longer you wait, deeper it gets, no?
Coupla holds on 6, but 11 and 5 were still turning.
I guess tomorrow will be all about "first tracks".

WHOA! The notriously finnicky Kirkwood snowstake is showing 13" with 0 wind which is similar to whats going on in meyersish. And I guess similar to Heavenly which is showing 14" with a 5% chance of opening

I did call them out on gaslighting in the latest UA post. neither the gondola project or the snowmaking rebuild would have affected Summit.
    Someone posted an awesome comment:

Alterra Mountain Company = AMC = Alpine Meadows Closed

FWIW, there is a significant amount of logging on tap for Alpine. There is a lot of yellow tape flagging on trees - but I've seen it mostly at Sherwood, Lakeview and Scott...again, nothing major in the area of Summit.

And OMG...that line at S1...no thank you.
    Fuck those fucking motherfuckers!

For what it is worth Mammoth is also owned my AMC, and they don't have the same issues of early closures as Palisades Tahoe. They even re-opened a closed Canyon base lift to ease access today, and allow skiers pow turns down the face of Lincoln. I would assume it has more to do with local management than the corp. Not running Summit is lame. Best spring lift option on those two hills once KT closes. And the sad thing is, the only use I have for the new Gondi is to do Summit spring laps in the morning and KT laps in the afternoon. That does not work if KT closes down.

And holy shit that is a lot of snow in the past two weeks in north lake.

My kid ditched school today and had been in line since 8:15. Dad doesn’t have such a strong case of FOMO sitting at work now.

No FOMO here after seeing that line photo. I figured as much. If Alpine was still open I'd be in the summit line. I really chose a good season to remodel my kitchen and spend less time in Truckee than usual. Shit, I think I only have like 30-35 ski days after 75+ the last 2 years.
I ski 135 degree chutes switch to the road.

To all of you complaining about Alterra management, has it occurred to you that maybe seasonal employees left on their own accord at the end of March once it seemed pretty clear that the season was all but over?

I thought yesterday was the deepest day we've had since New Years, 2/22 was close but not quite the same. Pretty phenomenal for late April. Click image for larger version.

seasonal layoffs get unemployment. management ultimately makes these decisions.

22 Blue - Looking ahead to the New (aka Fuck Summer (aka Tahoe Thread))

Drove to Kirkwood and got to the backup at Kirkwood inn at 8:40. Immediately turned around and drove as far up red lake road as I could. I may be stuck but no reason to leave

    ^^^^Nice. Very nice.

KW again operational. 10 is loading, with a bit of a line, but a short queue on 6. They even opened 7 for egress from Palisades zone. They have got their shit together this year for sure.

TahoeBC, I know that feeling. When Vail first purchased KW, I was suddenly over the inbounds powder days. Just did not seem worth it, when my touring days were so much more fun. Better paced and better snow. Having a kid cut my touring days down to an average of one per season, and I have become fond enough of the inbounds days when I get them. Sometimes it works out. The last inbounds powder day I had, we skied in the Corner Chute area around noon and got fresh tracks. No one was taking the hike over the ridge until we did. We even got a 2nd lap in with top to bottom fresh when the rest of Thunder Saddle was becoming bumps. That becomes a little harder when just the front 5 are running tho.

No FOMO for the Palisade shit show, but would love to be out at KW today. Okay now, off to work....

I made up for it today, set the alarm for 5am and got 5 laps in on Powderhouse before noon, was so fucking good. The only reason I stopped was due to total skin failure, Pomoca skins don’t do as well as BD skins on big days, might reglue with gold glue.
