Headed up to KW for a few days over Thanksgiving. Do I bring a touring set up or the bike?

We were thinking of heading down to Mammoth for a day, but it looks like that day would be Saturday and the crowd factor is scaring me away from that option.

Figure every bike trail except maybe Red Cliffs is covered in snow in the valley, but I don't mind driving a short bit to bike. That sidewinder clip looks pretty fun.

At the rate it’s melting, probably a bike OTT. Can’t hurt to bring both

I found a gps watch touring before work this morning. Left a note at the trailhead. If you or your buddy lost it, hit me up!

What impressed me from the video is the skinny, densely packed trees. I assume this was an area logged over and either replanted or left to regrow on its own, without any thinning or low intensity fire. That area will never be a mature climax forest again.
As a non-MTBer (heresy in this forum I know) the riding impresses me.

Strong work TBC! Thanks for working with TAMBA to get stuff open.

The Sidewinder trail looks great; the surrounding moonscape looks . . . different. It will be interesting to see how that evolves and grows back in year-to-year-to-year...

Logged along with 95% of the whole Tahoe Basin 100 years ago. Cmon OG, don't be so dour, it will be a climax forest again in 200 years or so!

O-t-t-yeah-you-know-me: the riding is ridiculously good in the north lake area right now. If you can get below snow line - it's sooooo good.

    .
hope so, even though at 271 years old I'll probably be too old to enjoy it. But I'm skeptical--I don't know if the area will be replanted, in which case I would expect a similar result, or if it will be allowed to grow back naturally, in which case I doubt the climate will allow the ecosystem to progress beyond brush. Growing a climax forest requires a succession of flora before the stable forest emerges.

U should bring both ottime. The skiing is actually quite good where there is snow and some solar effect. What snow we do have is based out nicely. Thimble bowl for example would be a worthy objective

Is there a decent boot shop / fitter in SLT? I mostly see recommendations for Starthaus and Olympic (original location) but I'd rather find a good boot fitter in town than a great one an hour away.

Between this, and the earlier PayPal shenanigans discussion, it’s been a good week for Super Troopers fans.

Ran up to AK for 2 days of fun via helicopter. It’s full on winter up there. Mountains are caked from AK down the Canadian Coast.

Strike mission with Alaska Backcountry Guides to check out the conditions. Not officially flying until regular season starts. Silverton and Third Edge were flying with rumors of some of the Valdez based ops but not sure if taking clients or only privates.

did anyone get those emails from Vail about "hey head's up you're restricted for these holiday's" and then 5 minutes later, "oops our bad, you're not restricted actually". I'm confused now. I have the standard local pass I expected the normal blackouts. I saw something about them restricting day tix on holidays maybe that's all they actually did??

Yep, got those emails two days in a row. I’m supposed to be blacked out, but kinda want to see what they say if I show up on a holiday

22 Blue - Looking ahead to the New (aka Fuck Summer (aka Tahoe Thread))

Blacked out from what? Lift served MTB over thanksgiving? ;-)

Ugh. I have a tradition of skiing on my birthday, which is tomorrow. Gonna have to find a new tradition at this rate.

The crust on sheltered N aspects is faceting away nicely. Not great skiing, but certainly not bad skiing.

Drove over 431 this afternoon. Plenty of snow up there to snag turns on.
Pretty sure one could find some skiable swatches up around Castle Peak.
The tree slalom action on Sunrise Bowl (looker's left of the power lines) appears challenging and fun.
So, I dunno, seems like there are quite a few options for birthday turns...and that's not even considering going South to CP or Ebbett's or Sonora or Mammy
