^Not only that but they have come out and stated officially that they will do nothing to alleviate the problem of them sending people to neighborhood roads to get around closures (even if the workaround only gets you past the line and closer to the closure point) when the clogging of the neighborhood roads prevents emergency vehicles from getting to where they need to get. They said it's up to locals to officially close the roads before they tell people not to go there.

while it mostly just dives into the guided experience, this article (which seems really well written) delves into some of the major differences between the European and North American forecasting approaches

Everybody is looking for a shortcut home. Just read about these folks that thankfully, didn't end in a case of
"Death By GPS." They tried to bypass the I-80 West closure in Verdi and took Jacks Valley Rd until they got stuck.
Hmmm, some things never change. Everybody's in the Donner party these days.

subtle plague and I have been going at it in the freeride world tour thread. He is of the opinion there are no mountains here worthy of holding an event and while I have no pride for America as a nation, don't ever talk crap about our purple mountain's majesty. I have a feeling in real life he and I would get along quite well.

I was going to mention that incident. Some of the funniest Google maps / Waze shit I’ve ever seen. I think that was January 2017. That “road” is actually fun to mountain bike on. Haha.

Re Google maps. OTOH, when the TDPUD bulldozed a road across the hill above our house and diverted the drainage coming off of Donner Ridge and Donner Lake Rd, wrecking several houses, they denied the road existed. Google Maps and Google Satellite View proved otherwise. Google Maps even gave it a name (an extension of a paved road in a nearby neighborhood.

Re the Olympic Valley video--not a rare occurrence there.

Yes, and why not? It is near the end of the storm cycle, a holiday week, resorts opening terrain and some of those people likely have paid for lodging that they can't refund at this point. Do you think they would just stay home, not vacation and eat the costs? Honestly, who cares if you need to wait in traffic if you end up with a great four day vacation in the snow after a mega storm. This is what some of us live for.

Tho we postponed a day in hopes of a quicker drive. My wife is stoked, but I wish we had driven up this morning. At least some of the peeps at KW are breaking up that wind crust for us and allowing for better transport. Next few days look stellar, and no ones seems to ride there during the holidays. Empty corrals and only the front side open.

Understood. Just heard there's yet another storm cycle looming, and hope masses of folks don't get stuck trying to claw their way out again in heavy weather.

In most other countries there would be trains trams buses to get you and your families easily to and from the resort. Along with many comfortable places to rest and regroup while there. We are missing that

I want someone to do this with a family and ski gear for a weekend trip and provide a TR. I am sure it will go great.

I always bring my own food. Your week old picked over produce is way expensive. Honesty can't recall the last time I shopped for food in SLT (or KW for that matter). Gas is topped off usually in Lodi, even though I can round trip from my house easy enough on a single tank of gas. Again, prices are insane up there.

Well, forecast is sunny tomorrow through Sunday, January 2nd, when almost all of those folks will be driving home by. I don't pay for the BA family blog, so no idea what doom and gloom he is forecasting, but NOAA looks like it is pretty clear, especially by the weekend. Don't worry, by the time the next group of systems begin to move in late Monday, the hordes will be gone.

That sounds a whole lot like socialism. This is "Merica bro. No way we would ever use a train when we have the freedom to get stuck in a snowbank.

I would love to use a train to get to the snow, but I'd still need to drive for part of the way and end up in north lake with everyone else.

Seriously tho, today and tomorrow are way better travel days to get up there than any time since around the 23rd. Not at all surprised there are. bunch pf folks pouring into town. KW still looks super quiet, which is the way I like it. A few days at the country club until the Tahoe Pass is not blacked out and then weekend will be nuts again.

The spur is still closed and currently Google is showing the pass as closed. Could be a quick gazex run though if it really is closed. You don't have to pay for BA's blog yet. It's free til the 15th with an email address (that date may have been based on when I signed up).

Just a quick reminder for those of you that ski the west shore. If the normal pullout isn’t clear, you need to dig a spot and get yourself completely out of the roadway. And even that can piss off the plow drivers if you dig out a random shoulder.

Don’t be that sprinter parked in the middle of 89 just because they didn’t finish plowing to Emerald Bay.

Ottime……the reality is most of our visitors from the bay do not exhibit the foresight, respect and knowledge or even the inclination to be a low impact tourist. If they all rolled the same way that you do then we would have way less problems going on here. Locals are on edge right now and the vibe is not real friendly towards tourists right now……I’m not saying it’s the right way to be but that’s just how it is. It really shouldn’t be as bad as it’s been but if they can just keep 80 open then it should be business as usual…..but when every Bay Area tourist is rerouted through south lake to try and get home on 50 it’s a bad bad scene. That’s why we are here discussing lame shit instead of talking about how specfuckingtacular the riding conditions are right now. Hope you have a safe and swift trip up here+++
