Your Ski Vacation Costs
Don’t hold us accountable, man!!! $20,000? 4-5 trips? Probably equal to our local costs with pases, gas, tires, and oil changes and vehicle depreciation with 25k miles a winter. Just the wife and I.
Someone once told me that I ski like a Scandinavian angel.

Not going to do the math but ski lessons are$$$$$ out west.
JH gets $375/day per kid for lessons. Aspen is only $255 with advance purchase.....
Hoping i can skip lessons altogether in a year or two

A Mid Atlantic multi family/friends long weekend can happen for about $200 for slopeside or walk to slopes housing, $75/day multi day lift tickets, $100 for groceries at the ski house, about $100 in gas to get there and back.. Throw in some stickers, hats and t-shirts for another $100. Triple the housing if you want to go it alone.
Go that way really REALLY fast. If something gets in your way, TURN!

Goniff and I split 5 weeks in Driggs this past season. I drove from Vermont. Costs are for each of us.
Targhee Pass - $785 (I skied there 25 days so $31.40/day)
Gas out and back (it was just starting to get crazy when I headed back) - $600-ish
Hotels out and back ($190 - I stay at cheap-ass hotels and I crashed at an Army friend's house 1 night)
Condo (big discounts for more than 30 days and you don't pay room and meals taxes) - $2,500-ish
Food (groceries) - $475
Dining out - $200-ish (we limited our dining out to 1/week)
Trap Bar bill - $500-ish
Ikon Base + add-on - $150 (skied 5 days at JHMR so $30/day)
The longer you can stay, the cheaper (daily/weekly) it becomes....

Don't really take vacations for skiing? We just go skiing. Vacations are warm weather or europe for us lol. But besides that, we did book a ski improvement clinic in February @ kicking horse. $1800~ CAD for 4 days of lessons, 5 days of skiing and accommodation.

I was adding on the Ikon+ at $650+150
785+
600+
190+
2500+
475+
200+
500+
900 =
6150.
6150/3.5 = 1,757.142
Ignoring Ikon altogether, it's 5250/3.5 = 1500.

Friends and I did a week in the Dolomites with 2 days guided and the balance in the Superski network. With the Ikon pass (a sunk cost for me) it came out to $1,200 per person plus airfare.

As I did something very similar to MNIAW and Goniff this past season, MNIAW's cost breakdown
got me to do some math of my own.
I too drove from N.E. to Jackson (but no farther).
Stayed for 4 weeks.
Skied 20.5 days at the village. 1.5 days at the pass.
22 days skied out of 27 (left 1 day early).
As a friend (actuary) says - "I can make numbers do what ever I want".
To be fair, Buster, you did not give any credit for skiing 5 days at Jackson. Furthermore, on an
extended trip of 4 or 5 weeks, taking a day off from skiing now and then can be expected. Especially
at the beginning of a trip after a 3 day and 2300 mile drive.
Now I actually did 2 trips out to Jackson.
The first was solo and driving for the aforementioned 4 weeks.
The second was flying out with 3 friends and skiing 8 days in a row.
Interesting to compare costs.
First trip - left January 13, 2022 and returned home February 13,2022.
Miles driven - 4864. Gas - $776.61. Tolls - $68.80. Depreciation (@ 8 cents/m) - $389.12.
Lodging, 4 weeks (at the cheapest motel in town) - $1810.41
Food, guesstimate of above and beyond what I would spend at home - $200.
Lifts, here it gets a little tricky as I ended up doing a second trip but...
Senior season pass @ JHMR - $1050. Divided by 28, times 21 = $787.50.
Grand total = $4032.44. Or $1008.11 per week. Or $183.30 per ski day.
Hanging and skiing with fellow mags - $ Priceless.
Second trip. 7 days skiing at JHMR, 1 day at the pass. 8 days total skiing.
Flying, with 4 people shareing condo and automobile.
Lifts @ JHMR, 7 x 37.50 - $262.50
Drinks and resturants (again a guesstimate) - $120.
Car, condo and groceries - $1130.75.
Airport parking and tolls - $75.00.
Airfare (discounted last minute (we storm watch)) - $500.
Grand total = $2088.25. Or $261.04 / ski day.Last edited by Ski220; 06-08-2022 at 08:58 AM. Reason: Add photo

you stayed at the motel 6 for 4 weeks? wow.
since this is the internet, I didn't read any of the posts.
but on my trips, the car is what kills my budget. I usually fly free or cheap. ikon pass is used enough to be pretty cheap. stay with friends or cheap. gotta eat anyway so that doesn't count.
so it's the car.
when I go to SLC if I stay cheap in sandy and take the bus I can ski super cheap. but it sucks not being able to go out and do stuff.
good hanging with you skier220 and Buster and the rest of the crew on that Jackson trip.
I <heart> hot tele-moms

I used the Ikon pass for 32 days back east so I only included the upgrade to Base + to get the 5 days at JHMR. And yes, a couple of days off but we had the condo for 31 nights. Plus a couple of nights crashing at Kokomas' casa. Didn't think about tolls tho. Not sure what they do with the toll money in OH and IN but they sure as hell aren't keeping the roads up to par. Also didn't subtract what my usual food costs would have been if I had stayed home but not that much less than what we spent. And we eat out once per week but I drink far less (in a bar) at home.

For the 4 weeks that I was in Jackson staying by myself I did not track my food expenses.
Hence the 'guesstimate' of "above and beyond".
Motel room with a microwave and a fridge.
Breakfast and dinner at motel.
Made turkey, avocado and cheddar sandwiches for lunch.
Standard routine - wake at 5am. Lounge around and eat breakfast. Stretch a bit.
Get to mountian around 8. Ski all day until last lift. Get back to room and clean up. Make dinner.
Go to sleep around 9pm.
Next day - do it again.
Almost embarrassed to say I have perfected the art of motel living.
For the 8 days I was there with friends the 'Shared Expenses Spreadsheet' that I referenced
did not break down particular costs. But if I remember correctly the condo was about $68 and
the full sized SUV about $60 per day per person.
So (60 + 68) x 8 = 1024. 1131 - 1024 = $107 for groceries per person.
Pizza 1 night, Snake River Brewing 1 night and Merry Piglets 1 night.
How much could that be ? I don't drink much 1 beer at SRB. Also don't split
my friends bar tabs either. Pitchers of margaritas get expensive.
So approximately $107 for 8 days of groceries. That sounds about right.
How much do you spend at home ? On vacation ?Last edited by Ski220; 06-10-2022 at 08:31 AM. Reason: edit condo cost

Your Ski Vacation Costs
I guess I could see $60 easily disappearing a day on food/drink/tip, esp ski town pricing (assuming b’fast is whatever the hotel has & on “modest” fare the remainder of the day, leaning more on dinner than lunch)
Grocery costs could be low if meals are low ambition, but could be competitive with modest meals out too depending
Thx for the breakdown — it puts it in perspective

Actually edited down groceries cost.
Making your own meals is a BIG savings.
So is not drinking.
Not everyones version of a ski 'vacation'.
