You should listen to the interview then. I mean, it's him talking to another comedian for over an hour. Not Gladwell rambling on about his own personal lack of humor, trying to impress us with his depth and education in all things.

I agree that Gladwell often does that but this essay actually kind of does the opposite - he admits that he doesn't get Norm because he doesn't know or understand enough to get Norm - just as he doesn't know enough to talk about poetry or appreciate the architecture of Sigurd Lewerentz (and I'm with him on poetry and not blown away by Lewerentz myself either). MG is actually showing some humility for once in my view.

Norm, I think, would have been pleased by the essay. Sure he wanted people to laugh but more than that he wanted them to react and if he didn't get the laugh then a groan or plain old befuddlement was just fine. And MG admits he is befuddled by Norm. I think Norm would have been smirking at the end of it.

Agree. Seemed like a really appropriate tribute to me--especially the change of direction at the end.

This just in: Norm Macdonald is still dead!

But he has a new standup special coming to Netflix on May 30th!

    Read all about it!

    Just you, and Norm.

And the imagined audience in both of your heads.

And bonus panel chat to ease you out.

    Netflix bootleg.

Not his best material. But some good bits in there.

I probably got a virus from the bootleg. Oh well.

    Holy shit. Miller and Macdonald

For hours. And hours. The references they make blow me away. Genius. Both of them.

    Amazing Norm

    Dave loved his comedy.
Crazy seeing Tom Snyder. I forgot about him. But he filled in when Dave had a quintuple bypass.

I walked into the fish store a couple weeks ago and dude behind the counter looks at me and says, "You're here! Stay right there a minute." and he goes out back and gets the other two people who usually work the counter.

Guy says to them, "This is the guy I was talking about." The he says to me, "They didn't know who I meant when I said the guy who sounds like Norm MacDonald."

So that was weird. Still wondering why they were talking about me in the fish store.

Maybe 10 minutes a week? I usually go in there once most weeks, sometimes twice, pick something out, pay, and go on my way. But I am a pleasant fellow and I chat with the people while I'm there, maybe I said something funny? Or maybe they were talking about Norm MacDonald? Seems unlikely but I dunno.

Are we overlooking the fact that you actually sound just like Norm MacDonald and that could be super interesting for people?

Gonna need a suncloud recording for those of us who haven’t met you off the webs.
