Sounds like your figuring out the what you don't want to do part right now. I know it probably is soul sucking work but figuring out what you don't want is just as important in one's life. Try to get a job with a contractor so you can learn to fix shit and acquire skills you can use for the rest of your life when you eventually become a home owner after finishing college.

Stack paper at this job until its time to go back to school.

a 2nd chance at college (especially when you are paying) usually sets people straight. Go for a degree that can make money down the line AKA stay away from liberal arts degrees.

Enjoy hanging out with 20 somethings in a 20 something centric town while you are also a 20 something.

College in Montana? Dude you fucked up. Working night shift in a fucking factory like some loser.

And yer damn right I fucked up. And yer damn right I’m working a shitty night shift job in a warehouse like some loser. I fully realize I’m pissing away a fuck ton of opportunities in doing so. That’s why I framed the situation as such with the hope of getting the collective’s guidance in doing something cool before I go back to school.

The pwnage and self-awareness combined in this response tells me SUF is going to be ok.

I don't care what anyone says. Get a degree ASAP. Get it over with. I don't give a fuck if you never 'use' it. Being educated makes life better. It just does.

Yup. Summer classes SUF, condensed, quicker, faster, easier. Get em in, get em out, get em over with, get yer degree and move on.

Maybe have them help me out more on the family farm, learning all that entails including wrenching on tractors and heavy equipment, loading cattle, or slinging hay bails. There are a LOT of life skills to catch up on in between grade school and university (IF they choose the Uni route), so I'd rather they figure their crap out first so they can take college seriously before I waste $$$.

My point being SUF, it will indeed be good for you to take a break and center yourself. Figure out what you want in life and orient yourself toward that aim. I say find a cause with a purpose bigger than yourself and spend some time doing that. Ever consider volunteering with an organization that will take you places? I've had friends who have volunteered on Mercy Ships off the African coast, helped bring medical supplies to Amazonian tribes and poor Central American countries with Amigos de la Americas, and many more. Had a buddy drill water wells in poor, remote African villages. There are tons of opportunities to help the world in very personal, meaningful ways, and you're at the very best stage in your life to do something like that. Can be life changing. Just food for thought. Best of luck, bud! Hang in there.

I know the poverty in those hollers well. There is a trailer off a county road that I pass by often on the way to a favorite fishing spot. It has a tree bisecting it and plastic over the windows. Easy to assume it is abandoned but I know for a fact that people reside there. There are lots more like it. Hard to believe there are folks living that way right in our backyards.

If you live in a not legal Mary Jane state that is also low tobacco tax you can start a sweet interstate business running cheap smokes both ways to NY. Tap out after a bit and head back to school with a duffel bag full of cash and some real world business skills.

I also struggled to make the transition to college. Withdrew after my sophomore year before they kicked me out for failing most of my classes. I think I attended 7 whole classes an entire semester. Went back after a semester spent working on a cattle ranch and immediately got on the Dean’s list.

Sometimes you need a kick in the ass to change your perspective.

This is the answer right here. You fucking learn how to shoulders up and get the degree done. You’ll learn how to discipline yourself and buckle down for 4 years or whatever and find out all kinds of shit along the way. When you look back on it you’ll know that you made it happen and you’re able to make other things happen with the same style of determination. The lesson is an invaluable lifelong one.

I would have been requested to take a dean’s absence, if I had paid my tuition on time It was my fourth year post-secondary (second in university) and just burned out the proverbial 2-ended candle working while studying. The year off was very therapeutic. Also took a semester of community college during that absence to deal with a couple of courses that were causing me issue, and to pay much cheaper tuition on those humanities and breadth electives requirements. Nothing wrong with a little time out if it is used to get back on track.

It's refreshing to see my 7.5 years to finish a Bachelor's degree in college seems about the mag average.

So many friends from home went straight through in 4 years, started a career, got married and had babies before I got my degree... after I failed out and stopping attending the first year out of HS, working shitty jobs for a couple of years to get the will/determination back, going to classes part time at night while working full time to acclimate to school and save $ to finish and then finishing with an BS in Mech Engineering. 7.5 years after his.

Then I went to Tahoe to celebrate by being a ski bum for a couple of years before using that degree and having lots of luck and a number of great careers.

I think one of my "settled early" friends is still married.

The road is winding, unexpected turns and trials await.
Just keep looking ahead while enjoying the moment and putting one foot in front of the other every day.

SUF you know most of my story. The oldest mags might remember when I was in EXACTLY your shoes. Like basically the same exact shit.

What I don't regret: Taking the opportunity to go back and finish my degree. Having met you and talked with you I'm pretty sure you are a sharp fucking dude.....maybe too sharp. Get the degree (more importantly meet people along the way) and then figure out what you want to do and most likely make a great living doing it. Life is too fucking short to not live in the mountains dude. The real mountains. You know you can't party like everyone else. Took me another 7 or 8 years longer than it has taken you to figure out. Those are an extra 7 or 8 years where you can fucking CRUSH life.

You know how to reach me when you come back to MT.

Should I live in the middle of nowhere for a few months?

I’ve got the opportunity to rent a dinky cabin in the middle of nowhere on the cheap. Its on a river, a few miles from a bigger river, and has touring right out the door. I’d work a few days a week in the nearest town and do a lot of writing.

It’s close enough to Bozeman that I could go into town for the day to see the boys and chase women. Also close enough to Pig Sty that I could get ample weekday resort laps if I pleased. But it is still 45+ mins to the nearest store and would be the same distance to work.

What I’m weighing is whether I would actually like such livin or I just like the idea of it. There would certainly be some lonely days, but I’d have so much to explore to keep me busy. Friends from bozo would definitely come out often to let loose and shoot shit.

Fishing, skiing, solitude, and wildness all literally at my doorstep in exchange for some loneliness, extended drive times, and scarce amenities. So I go for it?

I’ve already tried 1 and 2. Do not wish to give either another try.

I have considered a degree in ski town studies from summit county community college. This would provide ample opportunity for cougar hunting along the I-70 corridor. Perhaps we could rendezvous for some turns in the world class, high altitude, XTREME imperial bowl!
