FYI: in the past if you volunteer for a day you get a free entry to a shorter event, or of 2 of you work its a free entry for the HC100.

Prices are similar to other big events? BC bike race etc?
Great event. I can recommend pretty much all of the events Mudslinger puts on.

yep. the price stings but very very well run, organized. I like the variability of the HC100 course. Some years, a big loop around Bachelor. All fun fast trails. Bend is a popular riding destination for a reason.

For anyone who doesn't like to pay to ride here are some free events:

If you will be in AZ in fall, winter, spring, check out the Arizona Endurance Series. Underground/unofficial races with no organizers, no prizes, no support, and no fees. I've done most of them either during the event or on my own. Very fun, great group of people and awesome, challenging routes. You get a start time and a GPX track, and maybe some pointers for logistics. https://rockyroad5050.wordpress.com/

There are similar series in CO and NM, though I don't know anyone involved or who's done them, or what they're like or how well attended. Presumably similar to AES. https://coloradoes.wordpress.com/ http://nm-es.weebly.com/

We have a couple similar events in Socal, though neither has run the last couple years due to covid and/or fire closures. San Jacinto Enduro - https://socalenduro.wordpress.com/ (the Stagecoach 400 has still run) and the Wrightwood 50 https://wwfifty.weebly.com/.

There is also the Hard Coe 100 at Henry Coe State Park near the Bay Area. http://www.hardcoere100.org/about.html

For multi-day bikepacking routes/races, there are getting to be a lot. A few I've done:

    AZT 300 / 800 - now 4th Thursday in Oct
Tour de los Padres - April
Bristlecone (previously Dixie) 200 - Sept
    Colorado Trail Race - July

Lots of other ones, a somewhat up to date listing is here http://www.bikepacking.net/forum/ult...ticky-thread)/

Edit to add - the group BikepackingRoots recently started up its own Backcountry Bike Challenge. A group of routes you can take on anytime. https://backcountrybikechallenge.com/#

I'd like to hit up a longer version of the Dixie 200 this fall, the Dixie 311. Would also like to hit the Monumental Loop in NM. Possibly another run at Arizona Trail this fall.

I’ve heard good reports from folks reviewing the Nue series (Eastern races), so I imagine all of them are well run/supported.

It makes perfect sense...until you think about it.

I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.
