This sounds like subtle plague's jam.

I mean, BBIEuro was already his jam. But like, now it's really his jam.

Woohoo I am in from March 3 through the 16th. Had to wait on wife’s partial knee replacement getting sorted, but that’s scheduled now. Beyond excited about the trip. I will be bringing touring gear and in for guided tours and if you can see it ski it.

    0) When making plane reservations, I strongly suggest finding one with only 1 stop. Make sure the total trip time is less than 20 hours. the Euro carriers are much better with decent deals on Lufthansa and British Air. Air France is slightly more, but between the food, free drinks and the stewardesses, it's worth the extra $100. Also be sure that your ticket covers 1 checked bag, your ski bag.

    1) Pack light with 1 checked bag, carryon boots and carryon a 40L backpack stuffed with ski essentials: shell, pants, goggles, transceiver, gloves, etc. You want to be prepared for the airlines losing your shit for a day or two, so boots and basic outerwear is key. I also highly, highly recommend a roller bag for skis and extra debris, makes the train transitions so much easier.

    2) Be prepared for touring, but touring bindings are not essential. Avie gear and at least a liter of water capabilities are highly recommended. There's good rentals for touring gear, either frame bindings or pins. Most of the sidecountry stuff, including the 6+ milers, is a bootpack or short skin.

    3) Cell coverage is really necessary to keep in touch with others, potential emergencies and hailing taxis at the end of some sidecountry trip. verizon has a deal that charges $10 for each day of use of cell carrier, which can be minimized by using wifi in the lodge. we had used WhatsApp in the past, but let me think on that for a bit before we decide to make that the default. How about signal?

    4) The train stations are in the basement of both the Zurich and Geneva airports with signs in German, French, Italian and English. It's super easy and all the train ticket booths are worked by English speakers. Here's a link to train schedules, just fill in Zurich Flughaven as start and Rueras as end: https://www.sbb.ch/en/home.html . If you have the time and are willing to do a couple extra train changes, go via Goeschenen and the cog train up to Andermatt. Your other option through Chur and Disentis is easier, but less scenic. If arriving late, check for trains to Disentis from where there is a short bus ride to Rueras. The Rueras stop is tiny and requires a request. Coming from Disentis, it's after Sedrun. Coming from Andermatt, it's after Dieni. You'll need to either tell the conductor or press the little green button near the exit after leaving the previous station. You walk down the little path past the farm with goats and cows and mt-lodge is directly below, it's about 500 feet.

    5) Get a half price card. It's $50 but will save 50% of day lift tickets which are variably priced up to $85: https://www.andermatt-sedrun-disenti.../halbpreis-abo

    6) Get a Rega card. If you're off piste and wreck, the normal patrol will not help you and rescues can get very expensive. This card will get you to a hospital : https://www.rega.ch/en/rega-patron/b...goenner-werden I think it's $60.

Check out Telegram for a communication app. I like it a bunch better than WhatsApp.

While I agree, WhatsApp is pretty much the standard texting app in Europe. Guides, businesses, and our Euro mags are all native to it.

^^^fair point. Ya'll could also use Slack to share itineraries, emergency contacts, and other resources. Or you could those all the electro gizmos in the garbage and just roll. It's nice to have options.

    Fecebook/Meta ugh.

Hey, let someone else decide this, but we should all be on one app in order to communicate.

I tried to re-register for WhatsApp for my recent Turkey trip. It denied me and said my phone number was fake. I'm guessing it has something to do with me killing my FB and IG accounts? I ended up communicating with home via Snapchat, which also isn't great either.

US Cellular looks to be a better deal by the month and pay texting, voice and data rates than a daily.

While I love sharing my intimate thoughts with Zuckerberg and the nsa, I'd recommend signal over telegram.
Only weirdos use telegram in Europe

COVID Testing Required For Entry into US

The US State Department and CDC are currently requiring proof of a negative covid test for re-entry into the US.

    https://travel.state.gov/content/tra..._US_Entry.html
    https://www.cdc.gov/quarantine/fr-pr...tive-test.html

This test must be taken within 3 days of departure and proof provided at customs on re-entry.

According to vendul at mt-lodge, tests are available either at the doctor in Sedrun or at the pharmacy in Disentis.

I'll follow up with available times and costs.

Sounds like you can do a rapid self test so long as you are on a video conference call with a health provider. Likely more of a pain than it’s worth, but an option using something like this

The trick for that one is the video conference call from Switzerland.

Let me see what I can drum up for tests around Rueras.
    I've found this: https://www.apotheke.ch/desertina?ut...is/Must%C3%A9r which is a short drive/bus from mt-lodge.

vendul is also gathering information on how to do this.

    Stay tuned.

There are tests available at the ZRH airport, but they're expensive.

I used one of these recently. The conference call was from an app, available 24-7.

No one I know has been asked for test results upon entry.
