Looking at airnow and purpleair for Truckee as of 1700PDT
    Airnow sez 258
Purpleair is somewhere in the 500s

    Now that’s some variation

    Vibes either way

I ride regardless, but I won’t bust a lung if it’s high. But I’ve only seen it over 150 here once.
    I can’t even imagine 200, let lone 472.

I’m paying $30K+, to put AC upstairs, just for the few bad days we have now.

It's not enough to explain the discrepancy but PurpleAir sensors read notoriously high. Typically if you want an accurate comparison you should use on of the correction factors available on PurpleAir.

That's said typically the correction factors would drop the PurpleAir value by about 100 so that still wouldn't explain it.

here's a screen grab on purple air using the conversion factors (LRAPA) and time average (30 minutes), 1 hr works well, too, that i have been told is best. Note that the air district official station is shown. it's the point above "Truckee" in the picture, with a reading of "313."Click image for larger version.

    (Sorry for the tangent)

I read that as 100^2, or per 10,000 people.

Better, but still not very good.

No correlation with air quality that I can see..

Had a beautiful week in Tahoe. Woke up at 2:30am to the stench of smoke. Staying up at the top of kingsbury and this morning you could barely see, well into the 400s. Called it a day early and came down to Sacramento for our flight out in the morning. Still 170 here. Headed home to BTV where it’s 123.

Vibes to all that deal with this for more than a day or two. Hope this doesn’t become our new normal.

    It’s footnote #2, not squared.

Heh. Many people probably have multiple prescriptions so it's likely not accurate to extrapolate that out to say that 97.5% of people currently have one. Which is not to say that it's not a crazy number. The numbers for most states are pretty nuts.

Yeah, we’re kind of running into a crunch where, as a country…or at least in some regions or whatever, there just aren’t enough qualified working-age human beings who can pass a drug test to fill all the jobs we require testing for.

Passing a drug screen is not my only job skill, but it seems to be the only one that actually matters at this point.

Edit: AQI 49, but surrounded by junkies!

AQI was 175 at 8am for the start of the Steamboat Stinger. They delayed the start 15min to give people time for refunds.

Wife’s racing but we’ll see how it all goes

^ They cancelled the one in Tahoe at 190 in 2014.

I seem to recall mixed reviews on the decision. On the one hand, I think most already planned not to compete. On the other hand, lots of sunk time & $ to get to the start line could cloud the judgement of people that otherwise tightly regulate what goes into their bodies.

It's really, really bad right now, relatively speaking. Thought of all the stinger racers last night while walking the dog briefly; could see ash falling from the glare of my headlamp.

My number is 60 or so for the bike. It's been hard to train the past few weeks for SBT GRVL which is next Sunday. I'm considering a last-minute deferral if numbers don't drop back down by then, if they offer it. Did a 10 mile hike up to Werner day before yesterday, AQI was hovering around 80. Been hacking up cookies past two days now.

She just came through halfway feeling good. No complaints from her or others but I’m sure everyone will be feeling the crud for the next week. Still about 170 in town

Pierre's Hole weekend here. Last night it was 150+, thick enough to taste it and driving you wanted headlights on at 430. Cleared out enough to get down in the 100 range overnight. I was going to bail but ended up riding 50k and having a great time. 2nd in the 60+! Lungs don't feel to bad.

Nice, congrats! I was wondering how the smoke affected the race.

Unless you live close to the ocean, you best be getting used to it (or move to NE with buttah).
It hasn’t been atrocious all summer over here. We’ve only had a few weeks with AQI higher than good. It’s only been about two weeks with AQI with moderate or worse in Wenatchee. It hasn’t been a terrible fire season from a recent historical perspective and I’ve lived here nearly 20 years.
