Crazy-Ass Used Truck Market Advice (Pandemic shortages)

OK, so I have a ‘bad valve’ in one cylinder, with the most likely outcome being the need for an engine rebuild. There is some debate about how extensive this needs to be. The problem sounds exactly like a exhaust manifold gasket, FWIW.
It runs just fine, and could be a valley car for many months according to some. However, I need a reliable vehicle for towing and winter travel. The debate is whether to sell it now in this super hot used market, with the condition disclosed, and be without a truck until the new models finally reach dealers again after supply line impossibilities.
I will get more for it if I trade it in if it can drive onto the lot, obviously. I don’t think paying 5-7k for the repair is worth it, the thing is probably only worth $10k anyway.

give it a shot at a high price and see if anyone bites? I could go without a truck for a few months, but probably not the whole winter.

If you have something else you can drive, sell it ASAP.

If you're looking to replace it with something used, used will probably still be overpriced for awhile. If buying new, I think that'll be easier to negotiate on -- if you're willing to travel to go get the new vehicle.

18’ or ‘19 Silverado 1500 LTZ, slate blue or silver. Crew Cab. Hoping for around 60k.
Willing to wait a few months to find one under 30k, and I am willing to travel.
They are hovering around $35-37k right now.
Hoping to get $8k for my ‘13 Silverado LTZ as is, I might be dreaming.

I think you're going to have a serious challenge finding that truck at that price. Saw a friend today looking to replace his old Duramax with a new to him Duramax. Because of availability, used ones with low miles are the same price or more than new ones on order.

So, I ended up with an offer for $18k, binding. $10k more than I was even hoping for. Carmax.
Gonna drive to SLC this coming week, friend gave me a buddy pass to fly standby home.
As to the price of the new one, I am prepared to wait four or five months. I have found a few at 35-37k, and I feel the market is overpriced by 20% or so, so I think I will find it somewhere in that time. I honestly only thought I was going to get about 8k, so this opens up my budget a bit for the right new one.

That’s crazy money for your truck.

But I’m a big fan of old rigs with no payments. Do the valve job. If it were connecting rods or pistons selling might make sense.

Always think of repairs in terms of monthly payments on a newer car. Top end is cheap and easy.

I was gonna say, get a Carmax offer and unload it on them. I wouldn't want to sell a car w/ issues to a private buyer even if disclosed.

Someone else recommended another site Carvana.com when I was considering the same thing. They might offer more?

Hitting up the local dealerships and giving them a chance to meet or beat the offer, and save myself a trip. I am not disclosing the offer, we will see what they come up with. I told them they can go up on the newer truck price if they go up on my trade in.

Phil Meador in Poky gave me the best price for my 2013 Silverado trade in when I was shopping around a couple months ago.

Bad valve is a pretty simple fix at a good mechanic. Why not just fix it and keep driving it? 2013 is pretty new.

With such specific requirements for the new truck, and it being only 5-6 years newer version of the same truck, I'm thinking the same thing. Unless the old truck has other issues too.

Old truck is pretty beat, was time to sell without the engine issue.
This was just the motivating factor.
I put 100,000 very hard miles on it, both from towing, mild-ish off roading, and just hooning over the pass about 100 or 200 times.
I’m satisfied with the offer.

He has to talk to the manager first and convince him, he won't be happy, but the salesman thinks he can do it for you...just this once.
