I lived on Okinawa from age 1/2 to 4 years, moving back to the states in late 1969. I was enthralled with the american cartoons like Rocky and Bullwinkle and Mr. Peabody, etc.
Then, when Sesame street came along, my life was really put in order.

Sometimes I think that my disappointment on how this nation/world has evolved, is because of all the hope and positivity that shows like Sesame street created for me.
I got a little bit of many of those characters in me still.
    Oscar comes to mind.
Grover, Bert and Ernie, Big Bird, the Count...

Man just got the "Roosevelt Franklin's Elementary School" song in my head.

What happened to Roosevelt Franklin on Sesame Street?

Despite significant popularity, he was dropped from the cast following letters complaining of a negative African-American stereotype, and because his rowdy elementary school did not set a good example for children.

Not sure how accurate this is, but it's what I found when I Googled your above sentence:

The first episode aired in 1969. I was 10. To be honest, I don't think that I ever watched Sesame Street. By age 10, I was into shows like Speed Racer, Sandy Foxx, Gigantor, and all the Looney Tunes. I loved Wiley Coyote,
    Road Runner and especially Thunderbirds.

Missed it by a few years.
