3D Printed Topo Maps - Help fund my ski addiction

Alright folks, my 3D printers have some bandwidth these days, and I figured now is a good time to offer to the rest of the JONGs, MAGS, and other Jabronis here on forum.

I've been printing these 3D topos for a bit of time, initially to assist with route finding while touring, but when offering my services to people in the Seattle area, most just want snaps of Volcanoes around the PNW.

Since its a total PITA and time consuming to get specific/custom zones figured out, here's the process that's been marinating in my head past coupla weeks:

$20 for a 180X180mm (6X6") square of a location of your choice, assuming I've already downloaded it (list found below). I will do my best to update this list if folks want a specific area. So someone will ultimately be sacrificing their five bucks for the greater good.

$25 for a custom zone of the same size.

$8 to ship first print $3 for subsequent prints.

I also have the ability to do some tiled, or arrayed prints too which come out looking slick. However, with the increased area, it tends to increase the volume as well, so reach out and we can figure out a price.

2. Tell me which zone youre interested in. If you want a custom print, provide a google maps screen shot with a square (or pretty close to square) profile of the area you want printed.
3. Once I've send some screen grabs of the print preview, we'll figure out payment via paypal. As these are all made to order, I will need payment first.


Also: Being the gear hoarder and beer drinker I am, I am able/willing to barter for some good beers or interesting gear.

Lastly, I use my machines for a bunch of other ski/mountain bike related stuff too; mtb seal drivers, ski centering jigs, binding drill jigs, ext. Therefore if folks are looking for some of that stuff too, feel free to reach out.

Very cool. Have you found an optimum size of an area for printing? I'd imagine it depends on the amount of relief?

An adk binding jig would be very nice. I think they settled the mount pattern dispute. Guesstimate on that? I could post up in thread to see interest

Is the plastic tough enough to hold up as a binding shim?

How does the ski centering jig work? Would definitely be interested in one if it can cover a wide range of widths.

I've got a couple of different printers, most with a size of about 200mm square build size, but I do have a single machine that has a 300mm, so could go a bit bigger.

The 2X2 Alpental Valley print I have came out to about 12X16" and looks sick.

Typically best results on these prints come out when they have high aspect ratios for the given area, meaning lots of vert in a short distance - so peaks like Mt. Bachelor, or most east coast hills look a little underwhelming. However, I do have the ability to exaggerate the elevation axis to compensate somewhat.

Typically I print these out of PLA, and they're usually good for 2-3 pairs of skis before the should be reprinted. I've also been thinking of having an insert version to reduce print and increase servicing, so if there's interest I can spend some time to do so.

When combined with the jig patterns I print, it makes mounting skis very straightforward. I've mounted skis from 100-115 thus far without any issue, and seems to have a range from 90-120 or so. Since this isnt my design, I would only charge printer time if someone needed these.

I can mockup the design pretty quick, and if you've got access to a printer you should be able to print it yourself.
