Like Cage himself, you can look at this and see idiotic nonsense, or perhaps something humorously twisted, and brilliant in its own way.

Makes me laugh, and recalls a good time in my own life, and an era of SNL of which I'm particularly fond.

    I'll take movies for $500..

"There was no one else who could have played that role"

What is never heard after a movie with Nicholas Cage?

What perhaps is often heard (thought/felt)...

"There was no one else who could/would have played that role that way"

    You don't dig "that way".

    Got it the first time.

    Speaking of Travolta...

    https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/ne...score-1120603/

John Travolta’s ‘Gotti’ Gets Rare Zero Percent Score on Rotten Tomatoes
John Travolta's new film, 'Gotti,' a biopic about the late mobster John Gotti, has earned a rare distinction — it's gotten a zero percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

John Travolta’s new film, Gotti, a biopic about the late mobster John Gotti, hits theaters Friday, and it’s already earned a rare distinction — a zero percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie-review site.

As of noon PT, the film had collected just 13 reviews, and all 13 are considered “rotten.”

Travolta is no stranger to that dubious notoriety, though. Wikipedia’s list of movies with a zero percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes includes his 1983 film Staying Alive and his 1993 film, Look Who’s Talking Now.

Reviewing the pic for The New York Times, critic Glenn Kenny writes, “That the long-gestating crime drama Gotti is a dismal mess comes as no surprise. What does shock is just how multifaceted a dismal mess it is.”

Jordan Mintzer’s assessment for The Hollywood Reporter cautions, “The film is pretty terrible: poorly written, devoid of tension, ridiculous in spots and just plain dull in others.”

On the Metacritic review site, which measures critics’ judgments with a numerical grade, Gotti, based on five reviews, has currently earned a 27 out of a possible 100.

Maybe Tarantino needs to tap Travolta again for his last film, bring him back from the dead one more time.

    Speaking of Tarantino...

Michael Bowen, who was the bad valley guy boyfriend in Valley Girl, has been in a few Tarantino movies, most memorably as the "I'm Buck, and I'm here to fuck" guy in Kill Bill.

And Cage and Tarantino? Why hasn't that happened? We know they were 90's Rat Pack pals...

“I’m told that it’s a good movie and that it’s a lot of fun and people are going to enjoy the ride. But I’m not going to see it. I can tell you right now that for me, playing a surrealist version of my contemporary self, battling it out with a surrealist version of my younger self, just sounds like psychological sensory overload,” Cage said.

Cage stating that he probably won't watch his next film, The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent, wherein he plays a heightened and fictionalized version of himself.

Good article, and it piqued my interest in seeing one I'd never gotten around to, The Weather Man. Watched it the other night on Kanopy. Good performances all around, with several twistedly funny little side bits along the way. Alexander Payne came to mind (not a bad thing, but not his film).

Michael Caine was great, as he is in most things, but I couldn't help think how his BFF Sean Connery might have been even better in the father role. And would have been a cool reuniting of The Rock co-stars in a quite different undertaking, but I guess by that point Sir Sean had hung it up.

Ah well, cool film nonetheless. Recommended for any Cage fan.

Nicholas Cage should have played George McFly. He wouldn't even have to act

The trailer seems to be a bit heavy on hyperbolic pull-quotas and the base story sure seems a lot like Escape From New York crossed with a bit of Hell Comes To Frogtown, but the combo of Cage, Moseley, and director Sion Sono is enough to pique my attention...

    In theaters middle of September.

I went and caught Prisoners of the Ghostland at the drive-in last night (only place it was screening within 200 miles of me). First time at a drive-in in over 30 years. I had the screen to myself, too (it was the 10:10 late show).

Giving the film a 2.5 out of 5
Would definitely be enhanced seeing it in an altered mindstate and with a large group of people.

I have only seen 2 other film by the director, Sion Sono, and he seems to be about style over substance, favoring a heightened stage set look that stresses artificiality and mock surrealism. In short, the film looks great, like a Broadway stage production soaked in meth and LSD; it's reliant on splashy production design and rich colors (Sono definitely has ripped pages from both the Argento and The Archers books).

The story cribs quite a bit of ideas from He'll Comes to Frogtown, Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, and Escape From New York and there are some stunningly brilliant moments scattered throughout, but quite a bit of the acting is overly earnest and amateurish and the plot is a bit mushy.

I'd ruminate more, but I'm feeling lazy.
This review pretty much nails my thoughts, but in different vernacular:
