How much of a shitshow will Yellowstone be this summer? Alternatives?

How does it compare to lounging at the Ahwahnee?

You can still hear the ghosts of wounded WW2 GI’s in the great room while hearing the pianos Judy Garland and Sinatra used to croon over entertaining fellow guests. California’s “history” is limited, but Yosemite packs it all in.

Haven’t been to the original Old Faithful in years though the free lounging looks epic.

Hey cool this thread popped up. Was about to go looking for a Yellowstone thread.
So im gonna be driving from Michigan back to Washington later this month. Haven't been to the park since i was a kid but dont have a ton of time. Was thinking of camping outside Red Lodge and heading over Beartooth pass and driving through to Gardiner around October 15.
Do i need a reservation just to get in the park that time of year?
Pass still open that time of year?
Dispersed camping or quiet NFS campsites around Red Lodge?

Beartooth Pass could be open, could be closed if it snows. Currently open but it was closed a few days ago.

Bigger issue is the road from Cooke City into the park. It is being repaired from the flooding, I think scheduled to reopen sometime around Oct. 15 but that could change. Same holds true for road from Mammoth to Gardiner. Check park website for updates. East entrance from Cody would be a safer bet due to flood road closures.

No reservations required to get into the park.

You can likely find camping near Red Lodge or west of Cody as needed.

I'm heading to YStone this weekend from West Yellowstone entrance. Should be beautiful weather but I think a front with possible snow is coming in next week so check forecasts and plan accordingly.

I always thought trail mtb in the park was verboten but Trailforks has a ride near Mammoth Hot Springs.
Bunsen Peak road to Osprey Falls trail? Is this even remotely legit?
Anybody anybody??
Maybe too late in the season anyway?

It’s a gravel road. The gravel roads in the park are OK to bike, you just can’t do any hiking trails or single track.
Not worth it.
Anyway Yellowstone is all about the wildlife and thermal features.

fwiw my husband guides in YNP and he has mentioned a noticeable decline in traffic this summer- I think the floods scared off a decent % of the general public which just makes the experience a bit better

Have you ever tried to park in Yellowstone? sometimes this is the only place available

Just an FYI, all the roads in YNP are a mess. Even the open roads have a tone of construction, so expect long delays.

You can also ride a bike to Lone Star geyser.
