    Cause: abandoned campfire

At what point do we ban all campfires outside of developed campgrounds?

Like a ban will stop people from lighting their fires.

True but at least there is something to enforce when land managers do come across one. Our local ranger district now prohibits them entirely outside of campgrounds.... and they are actively patrolling for them.

We should just institute a new policy that if your campfire gets out of hand and causes a wildfire, you get thrown into it.

The cause of the blaze has been determined to be an unattended campfire close to the Forest Service’s Pack Creek Picnic Area.

All the idiots are busy arguing on any camping facebook group about their freedom to burn the forest down. I like Adrenalated's idea.

Immediately. Because it's only going to get worse over the summer.

How about they just ban people from Moab entirely. That seems to be the problem

FFS, people, this is why god invented propane campfires.

When camping in the great outdoors, I prefer the natural glow of an electric space heater.

Imagine that, who woulda thought? Almost like clockwork. I like adrenalated's idea also, cull the herd, but those idiots leaving unattended campfires will just say the forest needed to burn anyways and go about their arguments that the federal government dropped the ball on forest management and should have raked and thinned the threat via logging, albeit, worthless trees to loggers and mills.

My favorite kind of glow in the evening is from my pipe.

Anyone who is against the new management strategy to remove disbursed camping I point to these incidents. Less rogue camping, more metal fire rings, and more bathrooms. There is no downside minus "muh freedom!"

Yes it expands the federal government's role in our lives and no I don't care if people are scared of that. We need babysitting because of morons

    A. Charge the fuckers, criminally. Let's see them have to answer for that in the next job interview.
    B. Fine the fuckers, exponentially. Make it so they have to seek financing for a Snickers bar.
    C. Make them join the hand crew. In Moab. In August.
    D. Trot them out in front of the cameras to tell us all how stupid they are, and how their life is ruined.

Until there are real consequences, this shit is just going to continue.

Well, I'd argue the downside is that makes it almost impossible to avoid camping within close proximity of some dipshit who runs a generator from the moment he arrives until the moment he leaves, parties with a bluetooth speaker until 3 a.m., and enjoys doing laps around the campsite on his straight piped ATV.

That said, Moab could certainly benefit from a bit more regulation.

    white trash? wow

Timp foothills fire started last year because some LEOs were shooting guns... some great trails caught up in that one too.

i'd like to see the discussion around target shooting caught up in this campfire ban chatter. at least it would be easier to walk it back to just a campfire ban.

If you didn't grasp that the meme was in direct reference to (D) from the quoted post and not something I created, then take a lap. Save your keyboard warrior, virtue signaling bull shit for someone else.

My wife was in Moab last year and is now curious if the upper parts of TWE burned. Anyone got an idea? I don't know the Moab area at all so am a bit stumped.

New Burro Pass Route in ‘2023!

It's getting close. This was posted earlier today from Moab Trail Mix:

"The Pack Creek Fire is continuing to burn across the west face of the La Sal Mountains and is now over 8200 acres. The fire is currently burning through many of the most popular trails for mountain biking and hiking including Moonlight Meadows and the Clark Lake Trail. If it continues on its current path it will hit Geyser Pass, Burro Pass Trail, and the Warner Lake portion of the Whole Enchilada trail system.

From the Manti La Sal National Forest Service:
"An official closure order has been put in place in the La Sal Mountains while crews continue to fight the Pack Creek Fire.
Recreation sites/areas that are closed include
    - Warner Lake
    - Oowah Lake
    - Geyser Pass
    - La Sal Pass
    - Pack Creek Picnic Area
    - Medicine Lake Area
    - Southern end of the La Sal Loop Road
    - Miners Basin
    - Mill Creek Climbing Area
Trails in the closure area include
-The Whole Enchilada (Geyser to Burro, Burro Pass,
    Hazard)
-Trails in the La Sal Pass Area including; Tuk Trail,
Burlfriends, Medicine Lake, South Mountain, Doe and
    Pole Canyons
    - Trails in the Warner Lake and Oowah Lake areas including;
Moonlight Meadows, Clark Lake, Boren Mesa, Warner to
Oowah, Wet and Dry Forks of Mill Creek, Beaver Basin,
    Miners Basin and Mountain View
For the safety of the fire crews and the public, we are asking visitors to not recreate anywhere in the La Sal Mountains until crews can get a better handle on the Pack Creek Fire."
