I could understand some takers when there's actually pow skiing to be done but kinda surprised there's so much interest for these in June.
That being said, not looking to sell, but I've also gotta brand new pair, unmounted, still in the factory plastic with Shane's paperwork included.
I've also gotta beater, topsheet sides chipped to hell pair that hasn't seen the snow since the big 2017 season."The mind, once expanded to the dimensions of larger ideas, never returns to its original size."

A unique piece of history? I can 100% understand the interest in June.
I want them more as a cool piece of history to use as art where ever I get a ski cabin. I also have a beat pair that hasn’t been skied in a while, and never by me.

Now that I have 10 posts I'll throw in:
Vintage Ski World has a set of new-in-wrapper that he got a buddy-deal on. I offered to throw MSRP at them just because I wanted to see how they actually skied, but he said he'd rather keep them in the wrapper for his collection. I told him about the $3K set that sold on eBay a few years ago, and he said that he likes that they're historic and collectible, but then volunteered that if someone walked in with $5K he'd seriously think about letting them go.
Based upon threads here, I just picked up a set of good, skiable Spats for $600 after talking the seller down from $1200. One base required a small dab of p-tex, and there was some scuffing on the red plastic sidewall. I figured that $600 was a very fair price for a set of used but usable Spatulas, and assumed that the bindings were outside of indemnification and therefore trash. I got lucky when I realized that they were already adjusted for my boot size (boot center also perfect), and since they were Look the shops were willing to work on them.
I only got one day on them this season at the end of March, but they changed my life. I'd be in the market for a second set in the event that these ever delam.

If the spatulas were 'life-changing' , please find yourself a pair of Pontoons, too...
( I know where there is a pair that might be available... )
there was another Volant disciple here about a decade ago ( what the heck was his handle... ( rastafarian ? Maybe - ( no. but it's close ) ) ) )
anyway. back to Spatulas... skiJ

If all goes well, I have a set (189, with Marker Dukes) on the way to me probably tomorrow. I figure the Spatulas will be for fresh days, and the Pontoons for stuff that’s windblown or days old in the backcountry. I’ve got some snowmachiner friends lined up to take me out with them and hitch rides up ridges next season.
After doing a series of demos about three years ago, I decided that simply nothing skis and performs the way the stainless steel did.

Spats are certainly “nostalgic”. The reverse/reverse design and hefty weight made them ideal for coastal, dense powder. But, there are better evolutions of that design…and lots of variants.
Skiing on them can be life changing if you’ve never skied on a full reverse ski before. In constant pursuit of the perfect slarve...

I'd never skied a full reverse/reverse before, and the day I spent on them was in Juneau with coastal, dense powder. The only other dedicated pow ski I'd demo'd felt like a wet noodle on my boots and I couldn't wait to get them off, which was another reason it was so nice to strap in to my familiar stainless steel.
EDIT: I should note that the base elevation for Alyeska is something like 200'. I've only been in dry Colorado powder once in China Bowl, and it was quite an experience, but the reality is that the Chugach Mountains tend to be on the damp side (hence glaciers). I know, I know, you read about helisking and see it in the movies blah blah blah, and yes when it gets actually cold here and you're at elevation the snow is drier and fluffier, but I readily admit that up until this point in my life, I've spent all of my skiing in lift-served terrain, and mostly at Alyeska. It can be dumping snow at the top and raining at the bottom. (I also had the best powder day in my life there when multiple morning avalanches cut off Anchorage, it dumped 24"+ overnight, temps were in the low 20s, and by 11:30 we had sunshine. The only people on the mountain had either spent the night in Girdwood, or driven up from the Kenai. Every run was untracked, all day, and chairs were mostly empty.) I'm hoping to see what else is in my backyard this next season.
Anchorage snow isn't as bad as Juneau, which really is dense and wet snow since the Tongass is a legit rainforest and southeast Alaska as a whole is much warmer due to the latitude. I've been at Eaglecrest at times and felt like I was skiing in concrete. Again, head inland a few miles and get some elevation and it's different snow.Last edited by Alaska-RWC; 06-24-2021 at 02:01 PM.

I read it before I started looking for my Spatulas, but just went through the whole thread again. The DPS Lotus 138 is the next ski I want to try. I actually tried to add Peter Turner on LinkedIn so I could pick his brain a little on some history, including old Volant history (not necessarily Spatula specific).

If you have real pow lotus 138 is the neé plus ultra
Spatula is the original. And in heavy fresh mank, the metal is damp. But it’s heavy. And too short for tall folks.
Praise to Shane for creating RR skis.. . .

FWIW: A pair of poorly described Spatulas went on eBay a couple weeks ago for $287. The sidewalls had pulled out in locations, and the red plastic was gone in substantial amounts. Seller didn't use the word "Spatula" anywhere in the description, didn't post a pic of the bases, and when I asked he wrote that they didn't have any core shots (but didn't then send or post any pics). I thought about them just to have a back-up ski if I bend or de-lam one, but decided to pass when I added in shipping for something that was clearly skied out.
Just yesterday, another used pair went. They had bindings mounted and removed, and looked nearly perfect from the photos; I didn't even see any cuts to the red plastic on the sidewalls. They were in slightly better shape than mine. The auction was for $2000 OBO buy-it-now. The listing was up for three days. It strikes me as price-gouging, but the market is the market.
(Also, I'm still looking for 185 Machete FB.)Last edited by Alaska-RWC; 08-11-2021 at 11:02 AM.
